Japanese Anime Fans Vote on 'Best Character to Attend Festival With Wearing Yukata'

In Japan, summertime is the season for festivals and fireworks displays, and yukata, casual summer kimono, are frequently worn as part of the festivities. With that in mind, Japanese website Anime! Anime! decided it was the perfect time to poll their readers on which character they would most like to attend a festival with while wearing yukata.

The poll ran from July 11 to 17, and 543 total votes were tallied. The gender ratio of the responders was about 50/50, and people in their teens comprised 50% of the votes. Each responder was asked to pick one male and one female character, and the results were separated.

For the male characters, Gintoki Sakata from Gintama was overwhelmingly in the lead. He ranked #1 for both male and female voters, and nearly 20% of the total responders voted for him. The runner-up was Tanaka from Tanaka-kun is Always Listless, which aired from April to June 2016. He was slightly more popular among the men than the women, but nonetheless claimed the second place spot.

For the female characters, the overall winner was Kyōka Izumi from Bungo Stray Dogs, which began airing in April 2016 and will continue in October. Kyōka already wears Japanese style clothing in the anime, so that may be why she came to mind for this poll. She was ranked #1 by female voters but was only #6 for male voters. The runner-up was Rem from Re:Zero, which began airing in April 2016 and is currently ongoing. In contrast to Kyōka, Rem was markedly more popular among the male voters than the female.
