I found myself really enjoying this series, and plan on buying the remaining volumes (i only have the first set). I also own the manga :/ It is an adaptation of a pretty old manga, so the older feel in the character designs is understandable, esp. given Takamiya's occasionally odd artistry.
I thought the plot was quite captivating and enjoyed the Japanese performance for Jomi (but I’m probably v. biased). If you compare some of Saiga's previous work, Jomi is probably among the best of it IMO. I also liked the more human feel to the story. It wasn't completely cut and dry evil vs. good like most shonen. It actually left me wondering what might happen. And the ending was fitting IMO. |

If you don't like preachy stuff, the last few episodes are going to be harder to stomach (Jomy's enviromentalism speeches = every Japanese show ever).
Toward the Terra was one of those shows that completely hooked me as I was watching it. I kinda made myself sick with crying watching the last half. That said, once Fridge Logic steps in, you do realize it's only a B+ show. The writing isn't as tight, and it could definitely have focused more on the great characters it set up in the first half of the show. I was dissapointed with Jomy's lack of maturity as well. I don't expect him to be the typical shounen hero that can pilot a mecha after jumping in the cockpit, but after eight years of leading an entire race, you'd think he'd have clued in on a few things. |

Jomy = whiny
Keith = win Okay, that's an oversimplification, but watching the development of Keith Anyan's character was the most enjoyable thing about this series for me. It's not one I'd want to own myself, but I'd rate it a definite "rental shelf" (to use Shelf Life's system). It really is worth a watch. |

This is based on a really old classic shoujo series, so it makes sense that it's not like most shonen. Not that it's like most current shoujo series either.

I don't have an issue with Ms Saiga's performance as Jomy. We get enough sprinklings of Peter Pan refs we get the eternal nature of the Mu. Age doesn't equal wisdom. One could even argue living indefinitely could be detrimental to maturing since one would possibly lose the idea of maturing/aging requiring one to become more adult.
As for Keith-it's Koyasu. The guy is incredible. |
