Syaoran is such a weird spelling, I know it's the one Clamp uses, but it just doesn't make sense oO You don't pronounce the "y" and the r sounds more like an L ... how do they pronounce it in the dub anyway?

I suppose I'll try the manga instead, because the first season of Tsubasa was pretty boring already and this review confirms my fears of the second season being the same, but that might be thanks to the animation studio ... who hasn't really produced any good series those last years v.v So maybe the manga is better.

The second season is worse than the first one, imo. I'm a big fan of the Tsubasa manga, but to be honest I couldn't even make myself watch all the episodes of the second anime season. More pointless fillers, bad animation, zero character development, and a made-up ending that left me wondering whether I should laugh or cry. And yes, I'd say it's because of the animation studio (and also because they didn't have enough manga material to work with when the anime was made, so they had to come up with the countless fillers). Production IG made a much better work with the Tokyo Revelations OADs. I can only speak for myself, but I'd recommend anyone who's planning to check out Tsubasa RC to stick to the manga (which is awesome, especially in the later volumes) and the OADs.

I personally own all the tsubasa dvd's and they are very diffrent from the mangas point of view.

But even so i dont care-it still is a pretty good story, and clamp has been known to use its same characters in anime/manga but still comes out pretty awesome. Smile

I totally agree. I'm still amazed that I managed to sit through the entire first season. Every episode it just so slow with little development.

In general I find CLAMP's been lacking as of late.

That's quite unfortunate that Tsubasa has just become even more slow paced in the second season than in the first. Despite wanting to like this series, I couldn't even finish the first season. If it had gotten better, I would have been willing to pick it back up again, but now, there's really no point.
I've heard good things about the manga however, so maybe that'll be worth a shot.

funimation should just finish the book world (forgot the world name) arc and go striaght into tokyo acid. and either kill of the rest of the secound season or release it in a bundle for the collectors. because its an embarisment.

also when funi decides to get tokyo acid, they should release it in movie form

I've seen some of the TRC anime (and I'm a big fan of the manga BTW) and it seemed, just dull to me, something that everyone else seems to say. So I really hope that Funi will bring over the Tokyo Acid OVAs, those I would actually buy and enjoy, it's kinda surreal how different the OVAs are from the anime.

some anime studios are simply a lot better than others.

When do you recommend watching the OVAs? I mean, at which point/volume of the manga?

Well, that and the OVAs began the part of the story where spoiler[things get EXTREMELY dark.]

The OVAs go from Vol.16 to some of 18.

I liked this volume fairly, not as much as the last Asuhra arc. The Chibi episode was a fun comic-relief episode and actually smartly placed at the start, to allow an ease down from the intesity of that arc and not take away from the power of Black Steel. The Dangerous Road episode I thought was a pointless double episode (some of these fillers I like)

Black Steel was perhaps the best episode of the entire series. Strongly written, strongly directed by Nana Harada and strongly acted in both languages I couldn't help but burst into tears at the end.

As for the OAV's I liked Revelations quite a bit, as incredibly strange as it was but Okawa's writing was very strong in that. It took time to get used to I.G's animation style and Yoko Kikuchi's even stranger character design but I was appalled that a studio as acclaimed as I.G and director Tada couldn't find any time or reason to get some newer music for the series. 90% of it was recycled from the TV Series. Kajiura should have been given primal opportunity to write newer and even better music (I love the music in the TV series of course).

The up and coming OAD's this Spring really better start stepping up production quality to 100%.

Well, Syaoran is a Chinese name. Sakura pronounces his name as "Shaoran" - Sha (the "a" pronounced like the "a" in "banana). Then, "o" (the "oo" like the "oo" in "moo"). Afterwards, "ran". Same "a" as in the one in the word "banana". Sha - oo - ran.

I hope you can follow that. ^^;

Excellent review. I like the series pretty well, though, especially compared to most of what has been released this year. I mean, this isn't epic or masterful anime, but it's better than 90% of the other rinse-repeat crap. The crossovers make it more fun and help make up for lack of quality in other areas. The money I've spent on these DVDs was not wasted in comparison to the rest of my library, and I'll definitely buy the rest (having already seen the series).

The Revelation OAD's improved the production quality considerably, but also turned the story spoiler[in a much darker direction, toward melodrama, which I've heard is where the manga goes.] I know it follows source whereas the anime second season veers away from the manga. That direction is less interesting to me, though I'll probably still follow it through because it's CLAMP. I will probably get the manga soon, since it appears the anime will take a long time, if ever, to catch up. Normally, I won't read a manga first if an anime exists, because the anime adaptation is invariably inferior so is ruined by the manga.

You say that it changed the direction for the worst, I'd say it actauly added direction, the series was going no where in no given hurry with those clowns at BeeTrain.

Oh, I wasn't defending Bee Train's treatment, which I acknowledged is definitely inferior overall to Production IG. The ending they made up for season 2 was certainly inferior to CLAMP's Tokyo arc. My comment was on the direction taken by the manga itself and which was faithfully represented in Revelations. To be fair, Bee Train's divergence from the manga was based on a decision that the Tokyo arc could not have been shown on broadcast TV without drastic edits, thus likely enraging the fans. The content of the Revelations OVA (and its release in that format) seems to support this viewpoint.
