Nice review for X. The only thing left out of it is the fact that the damn series is still unfinished, and will probably remain so, even after more than 10 years!

Which is too bad. If not for knowing that, I would've felt compelled to get Viz's deluxe edition of this series.

For those that read it to the 'end'--does it really stop on such an awkward cliffhanger? Or does it feel like an open-ended stopping point that doesn't necessarily make readers feel like they've wasted their time? Either way, for a complete story with an actual ending we'll always have the anime series, which I like (but can never in a million years say the same about the movie).

If I remember correctly, volume 18 ends in the middle of a battle. I don't know if there was any material beyond that.

If I remember rightly, spoiler[Fuuma has been holding a sword above Kamui's chest for 10 years. ]

Thanks for reviewing Boku wa Beatles, it sounds like a really interesting series, I hope it gets an official English translated physical book release. I don't see why there has to be one definitive series for each decade, even within genres, I think both Sailor Moon and X were important series, as were Fruits Basket, Cardcaptor Sakura and Fushigi Yuugi.

I feel the exact same way about No Longer Human. Maybe I'm biased because I read the novel, but it just isn't clicking with me the way the novel did. The art isn't that great, either. Genkaku Picasso had much better artwork. And I kind of doubt that he redrew all that much of it for the western version. There are plenty of telltale signs that he didn't: buttons on the wrong side of shirts, backwards letters, everyone's left-handed., etc.

Storywise, it just drifts from plot point to plot point without much weight behind it. You don't get the sense of isolation he felt like in the book. In the manga, he just seems kind of aimless. I also think it was a mistake to skip his childhood. Especially given the intro scene (which is also in the book, although a bit differently) showing the three photos of him. I thought, like in the book, it would show his life around the time of each photo, and explain why he looks the way he looks. We never see him as a kid, his interaction with his family, why he has that weird smile as a kid, etc. And I like the bit where his friend was the first to see through his facade as a child, so it was a shame not seeing that in the manga. There's just a lot of interesting stuff Furuya kinda glossed over by skipping his childhood. We only get a few references to those things. But then again, it's an adaptation, and it's perfectly okay for him to take liberties with the story.

As a side note, it was also a bit interesting for me how differently things can come across between prose and manga. In the novel, he has plenty of sex, but somehow that fact didn't leave much impression in my mind. With the manga it kinda smacks you in the face, just by the mere fact you're actually seeing it. It's just funny how in the novel it's something I barely remembered, while in the manga it's the first thing that pops out at you if you just flip through it.

If so, probably has to change its title. Y'know how the Beatles caretakers can be quite cautious with the use of the Beatles name.

X was really good, but it sometimes annoyed how long the discussion between characters were. Not that they talked a lot, but Clamp used lots of pages for just short lines.

Hm, the only reason for me double-dipping and getting the X omnibuses is that it's finally available unflipped (according to amazon anyway). but i'm not that into X anymore anyway, so I guess I'll pass for now.

I also wonder if the last omnibus will have the the last chapters that were never published in the U.S. (the ones that would have gone into vol. 19)

Clamp might not ever finish the manga, when you think about the whole reason it went on hiatus in the first place. The same reasons might still apply to publishers today. (unless Clamp decides to change their ending of course)

For some reason I doubt it...

Is probably worse know considering recent events with earthquakes in japan -.- And Clamp doesn't seem to worry much about leaving series in hiautus... I honestly hope we don't need to wait another decade but I am sure we are gonna wait at least another five years...

I am really interested in trying Pluto, but I am worried I won't enjoy it as much as someone who has read all of the astroboy comics. Can anybody tell me if this is good standalone series?

Thanks

Yes, it's pretty much standalone and in it's own continuity. True, pretty much it's entire cast and some of the plot is borrowed from Astroboy, but they've mostly been changed/revisioned so much that a lot of the similarities are just pretty minor.

So yeah, you can enjoy it without reading Astroboy.

When it comes to X, I think I'll just stick with the anime, which has better pacing and an actual ending Anime smile I am curious though, does the new release have a new translation as well? I remember reading the older books and there were a few things that even I could tell weren't quite right.

Boku wa Beatles sounds pretty interesting. The licenser will definitely have to change the name though, or the lawyers will come after them...

I flipped through it while I was at Hastings and yes the translations new.

Some extra color artwork's also been added (with commentary from CLAMP at the end of the book), including the tarot cards from the original japanese volumes!

Looks like a solid release. Think I'll pick it up at Rightstuf's next Viz sale
