Episode 1

With both this and Hell's Paradise running on Saturday, there's even MORE reason to love my favourite day of the week. Day-um, this show is good. Love the look of it, the humour and the story-telling. Production I.G doing its Production I. G thing. As a Canadian, I was worried that this was going to show up on Hulu instead of Disney+ because we don't get Hulu up here, but thankfully it is on the Mouse. Looking forward to following this one, for sure.

Ack! <---that Bill the Cat reference was for Alan45.

This thing where Disney holds one or two anime hostage per season is getting a tad old IMHO. Netflix jail was bad enough. Now we've got the Disney Dungeon.

I think in this case, though, Heavenly Delusion is being streamed internationally as it airs instead of being held back until after it finishes airing like Summertime Render.

Maybe Edjwald doesn't have a Disney+ subscription? If that's the case, we should be mature about it and supportively laugh at him...

Yup. In my post, I compared only having one or two anime a season to holding it for a monthly subscription ransom. Hence the captivity comparison. I do indeed not have a Disney subscription.

Didn't realize that by throwing in the "Netflix Jail" comment I would be confusing the issue. Welp, it's too late to hit the edit button now. Apologies.

Edjwald, I think this show is going to appear on Hulu soon and I think there's a free version of Hulu, is there not, which is ad supported?

Episode 01: Heaven and Hell

Summary: In a post-disaster Japan, children are taught by robots within a walled area, where they believe the outside world is dangerous. Tokio receives a message asking if he wants to leave. Meanwhile, Kiruko and Maru search for Heaven and meet a woman who prepares for a possible attack.

Comments: I'm already diggin' the mood of this. I love the implied dystopian undertones and also like the two main vagabond characters a lot. The Outside feels very bleak, and we haven't even seen what kind of horrifying monsters are out there, aside from the big bird creature. But if we've learned anything from many a post-apocalyptic title, it's always the humans that are worse.

It's kind of ironic this is airing right after Season 1 of (The) Last of Us just finished. I'm curious to see what possible conspiracy might be lurking within the Wall. Maybe it's more high-tech than we realize. Maybe all the kids are variations of clones or something?

I took caps with a lot of backgrounds because the art is gorgeous. I feel it adds a ton of depth to the world-building and actually fits the old adage, "a picture is worth a thousand words." I'm very much looking forward to more of this series.

@ Tony K. - yeah, the eye candy of this show is unbelievable. Great to see you doing your reviews again. After seeing the schedule you posted recently, I have no idea where you find the time to do this, but I hope you can keep it up!

A really great start. Amazing art, interesting story and a world that does indeed makes one think of the Last of Us. Also lots of interesting questions to be answered like what is heaven, what caused the world to go bonkers and what is left of said world. I also wonder what the connection will be between the walled area and the outside adventures.

Episode 02: Two Confessions

Summary: Kiruko and Maru are woken a sound, go outside, then are attacked by a bird-like monster. However, the woman steps in, claiming the beast is her son, which then kills her. Once Maru kills the beast, the pair depart and eventually reach a farming village where someone thinks Kiruko is the electro-kart racer Kiriko Takehaya.

Comments: In the words of Ron Burgundy, "well, that escalated quickly." I did not expect that bird to be the innkeeper's "son" and for her to be Mrs. Lovette, turning her guests into meat pies for said bird-son.

The show doesn't pull any of its punches from the gory dismemberment to some of outright lewd fan service. But I like that it's going all-out, because the production quality for this episode seems even more through-the-roof than first. A lot of these backgrounds are wallpaper quality, and the aforementioned aspects of gore and fan service are equally as high quality.

Story-wise, you have the kids in the Wall, who have, now, managed to grab my attention. The one kid who fell off the droids carrying him up the tree should be comatose or dead after hitting the ground head-first from that height. Methinks these kids are some kind of genetic anomalies. Maybe they're engineered by the higher-ups living in the dome, and all the monsters outside are the failed or mutated products.

The only other element I could think of that would make this series even more mind-blowing is if they introduced artificial intelligence or androids, at some point. Gotta' hand it to Production I.G., though. They do great science fiction.
