The title, especially with the striked l, makes me remember the old BBC series Rentaghost... Smile

Haven't seen this personally though.

I wouldn't bother. Renta Magica is pretty boring (which is probably why the original dvd release is always on sale. I'm kinda surprised it's even getting a blu-ray.

Isn't the title supposed to have an L in it? The description in the body of the article has one.

Kind of curious about Rental Magica since I like Makoto Sanda's El-Melloi II novels, but it does look kind of generic. I've been debating whether to buy the Japanese ebooks while they're half off for a few days now.

I like the show but it is dull, boring with lukewarm animation and washed out art. The characters are pretty flat with all of them having a backstory with some combination of drama, tragedy and regret. Most of the villains are lame and a lot of the episodic stories don't quite work. It is so dull in fact that they tried spicing things up by telling the story out of chronological order.

So why do I like it? Because every couple of episodes it shows the potential that could have been a good show. Sometimes you get a mission that plays out like a good RPG party with the Celtic witch on ranged offense, Shrine maiden doing holy magic, barrier and defense, the onmyouji doing support etc. This sometimes also works with solving a problem where multiple disciplines from various cultures are necessary to get to the bottom of the matter.

If the show had better art and animation and focused more on the potential of using multiple types of spell caster to sort out well written problems it could have been a great show. Instead we get a show that focuses on the dull drama of competing magic associations, villains with god-complexes and the unimpressive backstories of the cast.
