Big kudos on the article, I had been idly wondering about the history behind Sukuna but never got around to looking it up. Thank you so much for going into it, both the official history and possible other interpretations for a clearer look at what might be behind the scenes here! <3

Quick correction. Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sukuna was never defeated. The collection of Sorcerers that fought him failed.

Hello Envyus!
Just to make sure, I read the manga, read the article, rewatched the anime, and cross-referenced it with other sites... and it said that the sorcerers who honed their skills in time, defeated him (From the Manga: Chapter 3 entitled For Myself).

Anime hyper I seriously doubted my memory when I tried remembering it (and I did remember he was defeated)... but anyways, yeah. >.<

That's actually a mistranslation on Viz's part.

The anime also says that the Sorcerers who all teamed up to fight Sukuna failed.

I also just read the Viz site translation has been fixed as this is what it says now.

I have to admit, I actually had no idea Sukuna was based on a pre-existing legend; I'd always assumed Akutami Gege created him entirely from scratch...

Anyway, thanks for this article! It was fun and pretty informative. I especially liked that bit about twin myths, Maki and Mai, and how it might tie into Sukuna's appearance and one his origin stories. Even if it ends up being just another fan theory, it's definitely one of the cooler ones I've heard.

@Ruby Red: I know of Ryomen Sukuna as a boss fight from Nioh 2.

Honestly, I'd love to see the Three Great Yokai as Curses, like Shuten Doji, or above them all, Otakemaru.

You know what -- thanks for this! I just read the manga in raw. Anime hyper
It's this freaking sentence that had mistranslation: 総力をあげて彼に挑み敗れた。

Honestly, that's why translation is a hard job, the translator has to be both high level on English and Nihongo.
