It has been 6 1/2 years since we last concluded one of the forum tournaments we used to hold. They were almost always a big draw for participation and conversation, and just a lot of fun. There was an attempt to possibly re-start them a few years ago but it basically stalled out. I've decided to wipe the dust off of them however, and get one started. Regardless of participation this one will start and finish. Whether we have 30 participants, or 3. However, any future tournaments will be decided by the amount of participation in this one. My goal is to at least have 10 participants from start to finish. More is obviously welcome and encouraged, but if there are at least 10 participants from start to finish I will probably do another tournament. Then another based on that one's participation. Etc. There will be a mini-game for this one as well, just as in the past. I already know how I plan to run that, but I'll post details on it once we have decided on the theme for this tournament.

For those who may not have participated in our forum tournaments before, they are head-to-head single-elimination tournaments which generally use standard tournament brackets. The first step in setting up a new tournament - deciding on the topic - will commence now. Any topic is admissible (except one that is patently rude or NC-17) including previous tournament topics. It's been quite long enough since those topics were used and plenty of anime has come out that could add many new nominations. Once we have the topic nominations will be open for characters/groups based on the topic. The next step will be to vote on who we all want to make it into the tournament. I will choose a suitable field of 64, 96, or 128 candidates (depending on the number of worthy nominations) based on how many candidates there are. The brackets will then be organized and the tournament will start. During the candidate nomination and voting phases is when I will open up signups for the mini-game. The brackets will be organized by seeding as that was by far the preferred method in the past. I will however not publicize the seeding results to try and keep a bit of intrigue and mystery. You can go through the votes and figure it out for yourself if you want, but I will not be publicizing them. Only who makes it into the tournament, and who does not.

I would highly suggest for this first tournament revival we pick a topic that is lighter in nature and more "fun". Something simpler to get the legs back under this thing. Something like Biggest Badass, Best Duo, Best Mentor, Most Evil Character, etc. I will include a list of previous tournaments and links to those threads so people can browse them for ideas, and to see how this ran in the past.

For now this thread will be for discussing the tournament itself (questions on how it will work etc.) and nominating a topic. Then everyone will vote on what topic they want most and the winner will be the topic. I am hoping to have the topic decided by the end of next weekend so we can get the ball rolling. Sooner if it's possible. Then dive into the actual character nominations for 1 or 2 weeks.

PROPOSALS
Keep in mind the following when making formal proposals for tournament topics:

1) The topic must be broad enough that representatives could be found in a wide range of genres.
2) The topic must be capable of generating a good degree of discussion.
3) Voters must be able to evaluate participants on more than just purely subjective merits like personal preference or likes/dislikes - in other words, a topic that would be a pure popularity contest isn't feasible.

I for one am going to suggest the topic be Biggest Badass Character for this tournament. It was a topic that got floated around several times before but never made the final cut. It would be fun and lighter in nature as well.

I heartily support any effort to try and revive this forum - count me in! I don't mind the first one being Biggest Badass Character with the caveat that I'd like a little more defnition of what "Badass" means. Is it just a function of power? Or does it denote a certain attitude as well? Like Revy from Black Lagoon, for me, seems to qualify as a badass both because she's great in a gunfight and because she's got a snarly attitude.

I'd like to propose a theme for a future Tournament as well: worst English language anime names. Anime has given us a ton of these over the years (I'm looking at you Friday Monday from Madlax).

I guess I'll participate..... The problem is that I'm watching nowhere near the amount of anime that others are watching; so I'm more likely than not to be unfamiliar with characters that are nominated.

Anyone participating can debate and offer up opinions on what "badass" would mean. For me it would be a character that either A. simply kicks ass in a fight, B. is the best as what they do in terms of skills, or C. simply exude that badass take no names persona. That's what I would nominate any characters based on. It's a bit of a looser term as opposed to say "best duo".

Fear not nobahn, once we get to the actual character nomination phase a requirement for anyone to nominate an actual character will be to provide a brief synopsis and linkable image for said character. Not just simply list names. That way there will be a nice index people can use for those characters they are not familiar with. That will take place regardless of the topic that gets decided on.

I plan to participate myself in both the main tournament and mini game. Since any possible prizes, as has been done in the past, will come from me personally (as I'm the one with the brilliant idea to take this on lol) in the event I did win the mini game the runner up would become the winner of whatever I decide the prize to be. We'll dive into the min game specifics, and how I plan to run it, later though.

I will join, and I would also nominate Biggest Badass Character.

Given everyone's approval of the proposed forum theme I think it's safe to say Biggest Badass will probably be the topic. Unless a large group posts in the next few days and want something else. With that in mind the next big question would be to go with 96 or 128 characters for entry. I think the topic easily lends itself to the higher number, that would simply means more brackets in each group & round to vote on. I'm personally up for either as the coordinator of this, but it's up to everyone.

There would still be an A, B, C, & D bracket regardless of the choice. If we went with 128 there would just be a few extra matches within each of the starting, and subsequent brackets/rounds until we get to the end. It wouldn't lengthen the actual time needed for the tournament to run.

Alrighty, it's been a few more days and we've had no new requests for a different theme. So, for this tournament we will officially be going with "Biggest badass" as the theme. Moving forward, if there is enough participation to warrant more tournaments, we will decide on the next tournaments theme as this one is finishing up. That way when it's over we can move right into the contestant nomination phase. Which is what we will do now.

Now that the theme is decided nominations for contestants is officially open. Here is how that will work. Anyone can nominate a character. Any character. You must give 1 or 2 sentences as an explanation for WHY you are nominating this character. A link to an image, or image in the post itself, of the character is also required. That way later on when it's time for voting if someone is not familiar with a character they can peruse the character sheet (which I will create later) and see who the character is and why they were nominated. Again, this does not need to be essay. Just 1 or 2 full sentences is perfectly fine. There will be plenty of time for supporting arguments for characters during matches.

For this phase there can be any amount of characters nominated from a show. Some shows will have TONS of characters that fit. We will only have the top 3 from a particular series make it to the actual tournament. That way certain shows don't simply steal the show. For now though you can nominate any amount of people from a specific franchise.

The other thing you can do is either vote for, or vote against, a nominated character. You would simply list their name and add either a +1 or a -1 next to their name. This will determine the seeding of the characters based on the initial votes they get. Whether or not we do a 96 or 128 person tournament will be determined by the amount of nominations we get during this phase. If including a 4th character from a specific franchise would get us to the required number of participating characters for that tournament then I will allow it at that point. We'll worry about that if/when it comes to it. Given the more open ended nature of Biggest Badass as a topic I don't think we'll have an issue filling up the brackets with characters lol.

This will last 2 weeks and then I'll need a few days to actually assemble the brackets.

It is also time to open up signups for the mini-game. I am tweaking this from how it was previously run to make it a little easier on myself to do it and the main tournament on my own. In the past they were split between 2 users. The way it will work is people who are participating will say so. So while nominating characters or giving votes for or against them just say clearly you wish to participate in the mini game so I can write your name down and keep track of who is playing in it. The way it will actually work is I will keep track of who you are voting for in any given matchup. For every character you vote for in a matchup in each bracket that wins that matchup you will get 1 point. If your voted character loses you gain 0 points. No negative points. In the quarterfinal rounds each successful vote gets you 2 points. In the semifinal rounds it is now 3 points. Then in all championship and eventual final rounds each successful choice is worth 4 points. So the points will scale up by 1 point per success in each subsequent round. Quite simple. No need to message me with your picks ahead of time. Simply vote as you like and I'll keep track each bracket and round of your points you gain. The ultimate winner of the mini-game will get either a $50 digital RightStuf or Amazon gift certificate I will provide personally. And bragging rights of course. Wink

I will personally be playing in both and if by some chance I win the mini-game (I came in second once or twice previously) then the second place user will get the gift cert.

So that's it. If there are any questions just ask. Otherwise it's time to get to nominations and signup for the mini-game.

Just as a point of order you can nominate people from ANY ANIME EVER. It can be a tv series, movie, or OVA, and it can be released at any point. So characters from the 80's or before are perfectly eligible. However, only ONE version of a character can be nominated. So no nominating Major Motoko from the movies, and from the tv series, and then the OVAs as well. If a character has been used in multiple series or formats they only get 1 nomination. Other than that the sky is the limit.
