I'd totally watch a 1 hour "serious" documentary on the event (serious in the sense that it would try to mimic what a real documentary would be like). I usually really like story that are set from the point of view of a journalist investigating event, like ace combat zero.

I have two requests:

Can someone please tell me what the woman was saying?

And can someone please tell me which Gundam-shows the clips at the end came from?

The clips are from gundam, z gundam, gundam zz, char's counterattack, and unicorn.

It's very well done. Even managed to elicit an emotional response. More stuff like this would be greatly appreciated.

Though this concept may be somewhat scintillating within its franchise, the auto-generated subtitles are not up to the same standard.

Although her pronunciation is almost good, she makes a lot of mistakes no native speaker would make. This is what she said

"There is no sky in a colony that grew up in. But in this colony there is, enviably, a sky, even if it's not real. You can feel a pleasant breeze.

I was a first mechanical engineer on a military cruiser of Zeon Dukedom. The first task was a mission in 79th year - the attack on Side 7 in order to destroy the first Federation's mobile suit. Yes today is the first time that I came to Side 7, but for some reason I have a feeling that I’m here not the first time. Here in that battle I for the first time lost my classmate. This Gundam’s head was blown off by captain Char. Then everyone thought that it was lost in space, but actually it was picked up by army of Zeon for their research. That research helped to develop new mobile suit, a suit which development accelerated, as also a self-development of mankind. With age this is what I understood – if in a past mankind had chosen another path, then surely there would be a world without war. I think, that there’s no need for scientific and technological progress for that. There is no other way than development of mankind itself, so that we could better understand and love each other.

...

After my birth I never was on Earth. Since childhood every time I looked up at my colony where there was no sky, I dreamed to see someday a real sky on Earth."

Wow. This is actually quite cool. I'd love to see them do more "documentaries" in this vein.

Total speculation here, but maybe they're gearing up for a live action Gundam film?

(And please... the less said about that Canadian thing from 1998, the better)

Well, Japan managed to do a live action Patlabor, so from a filmmaking standpoint the industry could attempt something. Although Patlabor is far more down to earth (literally!) than any Gundam would be unless they did some kind of Earth-based story. But an all earth based Gundam movie would just be a disappoint, wouldn't it?

No matter what the budget would have to be pretty damn high, it would be a big risk to attempt it for the Japanese film companies. As for hollywood, I don't see it being possible. If there's one franchise that Japan wouldn't allow free interpretive reign on, it's Gundam. And so Hollywood wouldn't do it because they wouldn't be allowed to do what they want with it.

But maybe give it a few more years of decent growth in the local film industries and a few more hits like Shin Godzilla and Your Name and who knows, someone might take the risk and do it!

That's the one stumbling block that gives me pause. But still, the cost of good CGI keeps coming down, so I wouldn't completely rule it out. Maybe not a theatrical feature film, but perhaps a TV one? Anyway, as I said, its just speculation, probably with a little more wishful thinking than it should.

It would not be merely down to CGI costs. The Gundam setting itself requires an international cast. Only Hollywood would be capable of doing it justice.

Frankly, it'd be better for the Japanese to just make it an animated feature using realistic CGI on par with Square Enix's Visual works. That way Japanese mo-cap actors could play foreigners.

Which would still be much much cheaper than a live action Hollywood adaptation.

Here's a link to a review of a mock photo documentary on the years U.C. 0001 - 0080 if anyone is interested.

Why anyone would think auto generated subtitles would be accurate despite evidence to the contrary I don't know.
