You have got to be kidding. Senpai means "Elder" not "one who doesn't notice me".

Only from 2012? Really? It feels like this was around for at least a decade or so...

In the article on Merriam-Webster's site they make it clear that they're very aware of the original meaning of the word, while also acknowledging that it has taken a life of its own in the lingo of the English-speaking anime fandom.

It's a reference to the ubiquitous (in anime fandom) "please notice me senpai" / "senpai noticed me!" memes.

That reminds me of when I see the word kappa at the end of people's sentences. For the longest time I wondered what a Japanese river yokai had to do with their statement and it seemed like a random non sequitur. Then I learned it is some YouTuber/streamer lingo or something

But in general seeing memes or internet lingo seep into real life is always cringeworthy. Now I imagine we'll get people calling younger people senpai and using the word incorrectly like so many others before it.

Mentioned this elsewhere, but I'll worry if the Oxford English Dictionary adds this word. Only then will it be seen as an actual English word.
But then again, D'oh is an official English word.

How sad is it that my first thought was "I think you can rest easy then, because you incorrectly assume a large number of people reference or at all use Mirriam-Webster dictionaries." (And I don't say that to imply that Mirriam-Webster makes BAD dictionaries or is a bad brand for the product)

American English has been swiping words from other languages practically from the start, so there's really nothing new about this at all.

Think they have a long way to go. Just me, but I have never seen anyone in real life or on the internet use the word 'Senpai', outside of discussions on anime.

and it is great to see more Yuno love.

I've never heard anyone use the word meatspace but that didn't stop OED from adding it in 2001. I still remember hearing about it on NPR and being baffled for the whole day.
