That Publisher's weekly article also mentions Best Buy getting some titles, which explains why I got volumes of Naruto and Assassination Classroom the other day. I was VERY confused. Anime hyper

But seriously, Viz, Natsume's Book of Friends and Detective Conan. Come on. Bring them in the Best Buy. Please.

And when will Yen Press get in on this??

Honestly, I don't see the point in buying manga from retail stores. Why pay msrp when you can get them for 25-30% cheaper through online stores?

I mean, sure. You could argue that you can actually choose the condition of the book you're getting but if you're unsatisfied with what you get from amazon, they'll give you a refund or replacement with no hassle. You don't know how many people touch the books on display with dorito fingers or just plain dirty hands, at least wearhouse workers use gloves and nothing's touched until it gets packaged up for shipment.

But if you are just buying a single volume of a manga it's great to buy at a retailer....it's when you buy in bulk that it's better online because then you can save on shipping and handling.

im willing to bet that their plan is to get impulse sales and people who dont know or refuse to buy online. Walmart does get a lot more foot traffic than bookstores so its worth the risk.

People instead could just go to Barnes and Noble they have a Very wide selection of Manga there and besides Walmart doesn't exactly come to mind when I think of Books to begin with. Rolling Eyes

I don't think this is the case currently, but I remember 10 or so years ago you could actually get manga cheaper than msrp at Walmart. If Walmart wants to expand their graphic novel selection, hopefully this will be the case again.

I agree. Though B&N is among the last major brick & mortar book stores, they do have wide selection. Though I wish their website was better in terms of being organized when I look for classical books.

@AnimeLordLuis

I agree; although it never hurts to consider alternative retail stores.

Though online would usual be my option for novels and books to buy presently.

Not everyone has access to a Barnes and Noble. The closest bookstore to my home town is about 45 minutes away.

I'm definitely up for Walmart selling manga. I usually buy online but if they reduce the prices like they usually do, it would be a great idea.

Considering I'm at a campus that gives us rides to walmart and only walmart every weekend I wouldn't mind, but I'd imagine the selection would be very limited.

i think this will be a test plan for walmart. as with anything at the "worlds largest retailer" if they make money they will do more of it. i also hope they can work a deal with Yen Press that would provide a larger number of titles to the public.

at the end of the day we can only hope the Walmart Buyers have a clue about manga and anime. if not it will be trash titles and a total fail.

I definitely see this as a positive thing. Anything that gives manga more exposure to potential new fans is good for the industry, and will probably be good for existing fans.
Having manga at Walmart will not benefit everybody, but it will benefit some of us.

This is definitely not for the fan who keeps track of everything that is going to be released and orders it in bulk as soon as he finds a sale that will save him 40%. Those people will continue to buy from Right Stuf or their local comic store and similar places.
I once was such a fan, but am no more.

My current situation is that I follow only a few series and I really do not care if I get the latest volume as soon as it is available. I am more likely to be saying to myself "Oh, I did not realize that volumes 20 and 21 were already out. I might as well get them now."
So I am the type of fan who might buy at Walmart, especially if they discount the manga.

There are probably very few people who would go to Walmart just to buy manga, but there might be a lot, including me, who would pick up some manga while they were at Walmart getting something else. And a whole lot of people go to Walmart stores every day to get that something else.

It's more about:
A) Wal-Mart being one of those Big-Biz'ness folks who think All Anime & J-Culture consists of "graphic novel" manga sales at Barnes & Noble, as reported by the NYT Bestseller lists, and

B) Wanting to make more "exclusive" deals like their Dreamworks-marketing deals, this time with Viz's print manga...And yes, pull the rug out from under B&N to "corner the market" on all mainstream J-Culture. (They believe.)

It's nice for those who don't have a B&N in their area or don't use Amazon, but I guarantee they're not going to find a breakout mainstream audience at Wal-Mart.
Say what you want about Naruto and One Piece fans, you can go to any Wal-Mart and say, "Boy, are they pitching the wrong demographic for print manga in the US. Confused "

Some people only follow 1-2 series and buy the books when they come out. So to avoid shipping fees which can be pricey it actually makes more sense to shop in a retail store. Also some people just enjoy shopping in store.

Also Barnes and Noble often have good deals on manga, Buy 2 get 1 free type deals pretty often. Plus you can save 10% by being a member.
