School-Live! (TV)

Genres: Mystery, Horror, School, Slice of Life, Supernatural, Seinen
Themes: Zombies, Survival, School Girls

Plot Summary: Takeya Yuki is in love with the school. For her, it's a wonderful place, where she enjoys her school activities, especially the activities of her club: School Life Club. The club has Rii-chan as the president, Kurumi-chan as another member, and the teacher, Megu-nee, always there for them. Yes, she is in love with her school... on her mind. Because, for her, the reality of the school and their club's activities is way too hard to be perceived...

This is definitely not your ordinary cute girl doing cute girl series. Although there are those elements, we are going to get some horror and supernatural too. I saw a lot of character designs released and voice samples so I'm curious to see how well the show will do.

It looks neat though imo as I didn't even think this would get an anime adaptation someday.

Episode 1:

Now this was quite something. I noticed how deceptive the OP song is for the show. If it wasn't for the ending, this would of been a normal slice of life show of cute girls doing cute things.

Then the ending happened.

Zombie and dark stuff happening. Well, I'm ready for a horror ride.

I liked how the episode starts with having us the viewer seeing everything from within Yuki's delusion, but slowly starts dropping clues that something is just not right. The broken window, the writing on the chaulkboard, the barricaded hallway....until suddenly we get plummeted headfirst into reality.
And from now on, we the viewer will be aware of that reality and knowing this will make observing Yuki in future episodes that much more sad and horrifying.

I went into this totally blind and certainly was not expecting the setting to be a zombie apocalypse. After watching the first episode, the title totally makes sense!

I've been waiting on this anime for a while. It's one of the few cases where I actually read the manga beforehand. Great first episode, though I can understand if the uninitiated were annoyed with the slowness up until the final scene.

Episode 1

Woah! Go into this blind, because it was an awesome experience doing so. Actually I knew something, the only thing I knew was that there was horror theme in this, but I did not know what that meant. So I actually started to feel a little uneasy when it looked so happy, and the episode does brilliantly to bring it out.

First there are a bunch of little things that stick in that something is weird: First it was that they are sleeping at the school, that for some reason they are allowed a dog there, that Yuki's uniform is different to the other girls, and they are eating spaghetti for breakfast. Then there is the classroom scene, something is not quire right, it did not seem obvious but there is something. The worry in needing to track the dog, the stacked desks, Yuki's insistence on not bothering the class to Miki's odd reaction. And then the roof, the shovel was odd before, but why is there a garden for crops on the roof? And then it hits me, the people down bellow on the track field, they spoiler[are spread out, why would they seem to be placed so randomly on the grounds? Zombies. This is set in a post zombie apocalypse].

But it did not end there, the odd classroom scenes, why is Yuki apologising to them? Why are they acting kind of oblivious? Oh my god, spoiler[they are in her head! Yuki is delusional to what is happening around her, or it is some sad coping mechanism]. A moment later we see it from Miki's perspective and just wow. This was a surprise, I am interested, but I don't want anything to go wrong. It is like a point of why her clothes are so cute too, cat hat and frilly socks, it is cuteness as an escape.

I am not exactly a fan of cute mixed with gruesome, but this might just work for me to watch more.

All girls..
Takeya sure is an unusual girl.
All of them are unusual..
This anime kinda sucks you in even when nothing special is happening.
Things got intriguing near the end.
Will give it one more episode before I decide.

Im glad i went into it blind because it really did have a good shock of a reveal. I knew something was going to be off from reading the preview guide, but didn't expect that. The fact that miki (think thqts her name) was reading what was obviously The Stand by King did provide a nice hint though. Ill definitely stick with it as long as they don't use something happening to the dog in a later episode as a come together over personal tragedy type situation.

I didn't go into this one blind; I knew it was supposed to take place after the zombie apocalypse. However, that episode made me think "Oh maybe this is prior to it" until the hints started to be shown. Then I thought "Well, I thought it was just the girls but there seems to be more survivors. Huh... maybe 'going home' was code for sleeping in the classrooms?"... then reality hit.

Makes me wonder if even the dog is real. Or if it is actually the teddy bear shown in the ED credits.

Definitely going to be promising.

Also:spoiler[The grave among the crops on the roof.] Thinking that might be important.

I really wish I had gone in to this one blind. Still, the hints leading up to the reveal was just subtle enough to be really effective though there were just a bit too many of them.

I think I'm more interested in seeing how Yuki's delusions cope with the coming events than what those events actually are. That and how much they're going to play with the cute/horror contrast.

I can't help but think Yuki's multitude of attachments will become a grave burden soon enough.

Someone on twitter discovered (and CR reported) that if you reverse the color pallet on the Yuki's uniform, it ends up being the same color as the other girls'.

The Steppen King of the "Standard" is a blatant shout out to King's work of The Stand which, without even touching spoilers for either, also features an apocalypse and a hand full of survivors trying to make it after the end of the human civilization.

A possible spoiler spoiler[is that the Villain in the Stand and the "evil mega corp" that exists in School Live are both named Randall striking up another blatant reference.]

Episode 2:

Hmm, I noticed the OP song's slight change. Makes sense I guess.

And we get a "test of courage" and the actual zombie stuff especially in the second half this episode. Interesting. Also some ominous foreshadowing for Kurumi at the end there D:

Nice episode overall, even more sinister buildup while maintaining a degree of comedy.

Finally, we get to see the shovel in action.

This episode was great, and should satisfy people who were unsure about the series after the first episode. Also, they mentioned that Mii-kun was spoiler[at the mall when the outbreak happened], which is my favorite arc from the manga, so I'm particularly excited.

I did enjoy the first episode, whilst knowing about the Zombie outbreak reveal but I was honestly bored senseless until the final 5 minutes this time around.

It was disturbing at first with how Yuki could completely disregard the situation they are in and create this school life fantasy world to live in, but that bird has flown the nest. Her condition has now become downright dangerous to the other survivors and no longer creates that shock factor to me (the audience).

I wasn't expecting High School of the Dead, but the Zombie outbreak survivor scenario could be exchanged for any multiple un/natural disasters and I don't think it would have added anything new to the show.

I'll give it another episode of course, but it may just be one of those shows that doesn't appeal to me.
