I guess I missed the Lain controversy - what,really was wrong with it, that Funimation could have done better on? I looked it up on blu-ray.com and the TL;DR of that review seems to be "you guys are forgetting that Lain always looked like crap" (and it did, which is why I decided against purchasing the blu-rays since I already have the DVDs) I take all complaints on video quality with a grain of salt. Maybe I just don't have a good eye for it, but I never notice the issues people complain about until they're pointed out to me, and the issues I do notice either no one seems to care about (why is no one talking about how dusty and grainy some of the black scenes in the new Cardcaptor Sakura blu-rays are?) or were issues with the original Japanese version (I wanted to beat Funi over the head for the color compression on Steins;Gate but apparently that's how the series always looked, ugh) |

Is Proactiv directly tied to Perry? Since I don't follow pop music, those ads were the first I'd ever heard of her, so once she started showing up on my radar elsewhere, all I could think about was her acne problems. That might be one reason celebrities try to avoid doing ads here.

Well this week Answerman was very interesting to read. I don't have anything to add about the first 2 questions and the last one since I'm not an expert on those.
But the one Ava asked got my attention, I remember reading about this from a website that talked about Cool Japan. I was told a bit differently about Japanese celebrities on ads:

Whether or not it's intended for kids shouldn't stop it from going through the normal channels (CR has Pretty Cure for starters.). It's mostly the companies behind Ronia, as Justin said, that would make it very unlikely to be in those sites. Concerning Japanese commercials, this is a bit of a tangent but I believe the country is the only one that can afford to hire Western talent to show up in their commercials. I've been to other Asian countries and they seem to prefer to stick to their domestic stars for advertisement. I'm sure they'd love to hire Arnie or Tommy Lee Jones just as much as Japan does, but the bill to to hire their services maybe too much for them. |

It's not only Japanese idols, who appear in commercials in Japan. Respected Japanese artists and bands such as Jun Togawa, Sheena Ringo, Pizzicato Five, Yellow Magic Orchestra have also appeared in commercials.
I've actually seen at least Jane Fonda, Vanessa Hudgens, Nastassja Kinski and Sela Ward in some skin care, make-up or shampoo commercials, which aired in Finland, which means they were aimed at Western or at least European markets. Shakira, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and P!nk, among others have advertised Coca Cola or Pepsi globally. |

I seem to recall reading about those Moribito BD problems before, but I didn't dig into it then. This time I did, and it seems I got the bad MB (MW?) version. Not that the Viz version is perfect, but it's closer to the Japanese BD.
Hmm, I'll have to take a look at those scenes myself to decide if they're bad enough to buy this series yet again (I had the DVDs before that). As for Ronja, so what if it's for kids? So are Totoro and Kiki's, and those are Ghibli classics. As for having enough content, did you read the book or only watch the live-action movie? The latter left out quite a bit of story as I recall. I think there's enough content for a 2-cour series. |

I can validate that, during my time in South Korea, I saw a lot of ads and commercial featuring K-pop idols and celebrities when I was there for one month, and I'm not joking. |

I'm not sure which Western celeb does the most ads in Japan, but Tommy Lee Jones is probably up there on that list.

I'm not much of a crowd person, so generally I agree with you on this. At least if you have to visit a shopping center go at a calmer time and leave the holidays for the masses. You'll do yourself a favor... ...Generally, being the keyword. Some articles are often better bought off-line. Like clothes. Shoes. When your size is 43, and you can't fit your foot in a number 46, the understanding of why so many net stores dealing with apparel have fallen to avalanches of returned goods comes easy...
Which is a damn shame, as if handled correctly, lot of money left on the table... And double-damn as their entire catalog is already online, Ronja included, just not in a form they have any control over...
Which I would be glad over, if not for the fact it's so heavily region restricted. And a single season of a franchise doesn't the audience feed... |

I know a lot of people who didn't realize that such artifacts were not in fact an artifact of their inexpensive televisions, so I'll add this, too, to make it clearer: Geneon Japan's release: http://i.imgur.com/qWbNu.png Funi's release: http://i.imgur.com/4XGTy.png There's still a slight amount of banding in the Japanese release, but it is dithered to the point where it's much less offensive to picky eyes. I think the funny thing about American celebrities in Japanese advertising is you can sometimes see that celebrity more in Japan as a result than you ever did in the US. Case in point: Tommy Lee Jones. For Boss Coffee, he shows up on TV, on print ads in magazines, his face on the side of vending machines, his face on billboards, etc. I never, ever saw his face anywhere near this much in the US.
