We've heard stories about there will a live adaptation of a popular Japanese series but it comes down to when it gets released. Other than making the movie (which understandably does take years), its release date is an issue because said movie could end taking over a decade between the day its announced and released.

Bleh, I predict not great things for this. Why DOES there need to be an MGS film anyway? The games are intended to be a cinematic experience in the first place; and of course the gameplay, your participation, is what moves the story along; add the complex backstory from MG 1 on---counting the Naked Snake games, which obviously precede the story of MG 1---and it just gets too big to take on.

Point is, MGS is fine as it is. With a standard Hollywood-sanctioned adaptation, there is too much possibility for things to be ruined. Like the fourth wall humor; would they account for that? Codec conversations, where much of the story and character development comes from? Atmosphere, score (would probably suck, needs a synthy feel IMO), elements of the story like the distinctly Asian/Japanese themes (for example, Metal Gear 2 reminded me, in spots, of a classic Shonen Jump manga) that would probably fly right over a Hollywood screenwriter's head or be deliberately ignored as "something Americans won't identify with,", etc. Maybe it's just me, but I think American filmmakers who take inspiration from popular Asian entertainment often just focus on the superficial elements.

I think the one thing that could be improved on is the acting I guess. I always found the delivery in the early games to be pretty hit-or-miss, sometimes missing so hard it flies over the edge (Otacon crying in MGS 2, not sure I was supposed to cackle and facepalm during that scene). I guess that's improved with 4 and on, though, as video game acting has improved and attracts big stars like Kiefer Sutherland.

But yeah, I'm playing MGS 1 ATM so I did a double take when I saw the cover on ANN's homepage. :S
