It'd be awesome if the surprise was Funimation announcing they were dubbing 3.33 and provided a release date.

Hey, a guy can dream!

Actually, I was assuming that was a given, but maybe I'm being overly optimistic. A license rescue of the Evangelion TV series perhaps? A re-issue/rescue of End of Evangelion that actually looks decent? I don't really keep up with the minutiae of who owns what license but I am under the impression that those licenses to ADV/Sentai/23 and Manga/Starz respectively have expired.

Any of those would be great news, but I'd even settle for a contest where Funi gives away a couple of 1/1 Rei/Asuka figures. Hey, it worked for that Japanese burger restaurant, didn't it?

Sneak peek of the 1st English dub episode of Space Dandy! Wouldn't that be a surprise considering simulcast dubs very rarely happen? Surprised

Rescuing the TV series is unlikely - ADV would sell everything before giving up on that.

...a greater possibility is that they might have acquired the rights to the finale movie for the original series, End of Evangelion (plus the "Death & Rebirth clip show movie...but that's just a clip show recap movie).

Manga Entertainment infamously outbid and snatched the rights to End of Eva from ADV back in the day.

Yet the rights officially lapsed for Manga Entertainment a while ago.

The license for End of Eva is *ridiculously expensive*, but people would actually pay for it - that, and as ANNcast has pointed out, the original Manga release was infamously one of the worst DVD releases ever made.

I mean visually, it has a bizarre "glow" effect, contrast problem, in which any bright object seems fuzzy. It was godawful.

If they release a remastered version, people would be justified in paying the exorbitant price - Japan's "ReNewal" release of End of Eva was great, but American fans missed out on it.

Whatever the surprise is, it has to be taken into account that the schedule lists it as being 15 minutes long, and it reruns later that night. You can't draw out a "3.33 is being dubbed!" into 15 minutes. My current wild guess is that it's a special Toonami-specific event, like the old Total Immersion Events. But I have no idea and that's just a wild guess off the top of my head. I'm curious about the surprise too.

Plus this is the first time we haven't had Bleach on the lineup in ages. The block starts with 2.22 tonight.

*edit*
Well the Toonami tumblr has a Q&A going on right now, and they said no Total Immersion Event. But it has to be something that fills up 15 minutes of time.

Is this better than the TV series or just as bad? Somebody with any recommendations. Because if it's not, I ain't watching it with the kids and/or wife. I hated Eva back in 1996 and I still harbor hate. I never attempted to watch this, because it's Evangelion, the most overrated and LAME mecha franchise of all time.

What I know is that 1.11 recapped the first 6 episodes(more or less), while 2.22 starts to diverge from the events of the original series. They add a new EVA pilot and stuff, while Asuka also shows up. It's up to you if that sounds interesting, YamadaKun.

I hate Asuka. Annoying voice in any language, especially English and Japanese, no personality, original tsundere and I hate those, so yeah, this sounds bad. Not watching.

Oh look, it's one of these guys, lol

But seriously, hoping to see a cool announcement of something big, though 15 minutes is a bit much for a small announcement buuuut.

You know, I'd probably put the money on it being a 15 min. dubbed preview of 3.33 with a possible release date for the home media release. It's similar for what they did for the Index movie in Japan - show a approx. 15 minute teaser clip to get people enticed to buy the home release of the movie.

I'm with you about Evangelion being a tad overrated, but watching Rebuild 1.11 a few months ago I started to remember how good Evangelion was. It's not ground-breaking these days, and it's not for everyone, but it is still an interesting series. It's not my #1 favorite anime or anything, but it's in my list somewhere.

This doesn't need to be an argument thread though. If you don't want to watch, that's no big deal. It doesn't affect us, so I respect your decision.

I watch Toonami every week, so I'm watching this week no matter what's on. Nothing else is on, and all fails, I might like it. I do that for every new thing on Toonami. Sometimes it doesn't work out so well(Tenchi Muyo GXP, and I'm sorry but IGPX too), but many times it has done me well(Casshern Sins, Soul Eater, Sword Art Online, etc.).
