An unfair comparison, given the slow production schedule of the Rebuild of Evangelion series, which is taking its time to get it right:

and while 3 UC OVA episodes at 1 hour each = 3 hours of Blu Ray, 2 Rebuild of Eva movies at 90 minutes each also = 3 hours of Blu Ray.

[also, Gundam UC is amazing]

This record is specifically for original video anime, so the new Evangelion films would be in a separate category.

Great to see it performing well. Got mine over the weekend - episode 3 is fantastic imo. The quality never fails to impress. Seriously feel like Im watching a piece of anime history every time a new episode is released.

Three more; they've got 6, they've put out 3, they got 3 more.
By the way, is anyone even surprised? Has Gundam ever not debuted at number 1?

The first series. Like Star Trek, it was initially cancelled due to poor ratings. Laughing

Gundam has had a few disappointing series in terms of sales like Gundam X (the only other Gundam series to get cancelled), and V Gundam (the series that caused the creation of the AUs).

I should've been more specific and just said "DVD/BR sales" but why bother. Anyways, congratulations Unicorn. Here's to your next three #1s.

Do you have to watch the older series to be able to understand UC?

That reminds me that I should probably finish Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack so that I can finally take a look at this.

I don't think they were comparing the Rebuild of Eva to Gundam Unicorn outright in terms of sales. But overall, I'm glad both are fairing well in such hard times.

True. Gundam Seed Destiny comes to mind when you bring up disappointing series in terms of sales. Seed did extremely well, but something went horribly wrong with Seed Destiny. Gundam V tried to continue the UC tradition after F91, but it didn't click on a number of scales (The Kill 'em all meter was off the scale in that one). The AUs were part of a new wave to keep that legacy going, but Gundam X is among the weakest performers of the AU gundam shows.
