This doesn't seem to be a generally-watched series. Not many appear to have seen this, but that's just a guess from surfing, so maybe its been watched but not talked about.

I'm thinking about purchasing this series, and I was wondering (to all those who have seen it), if it was worth the expensive price.

First of all, is it appropriate for a fourteen year old? I see that those who have posted reviews on it all over the web have stated that its content rating is 15+ or 16+, yet it was aired on a Children's channel in Japan. At 2:00 AM mind you, but still, a channel for young viewers.

I'm aware that it's a dark and disturbing series, some how, but is it disturbing because of the idea of spoiler[children killing and inflicting cruelty], or because of graphic shots? I'd prefer the first one, but as long as Narutaru doesn't exceed the violence of, say, Princess Mononoke (which was only rated 14+, but it was quite violent.)

My basic questions: Is it worth it? Why the rating? Without spoiling the plot, what's the most disturbing thing I'd have to watch?

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Only if s/he is way much more mature than an average 14 year old. Frankly, NO.

The former reason. In my opinion, those ideas are much more violent than graphical blood and gore.

The anime version had been toned down quite a bit. The most disturbing thing? Bullying beyond normal levels in the final arc.

Actually, the fourteen year old is me. I think I could handle such a series, hearing that it's been quite toned down compared to the manga.

It looks like a really interesting series. If it's only 15+ (aired on a children's channel, too) what could be so disturbing about it? As long as I don't have to deal with people being sliced into pieces or something, I think I'll be fine.

True, after reading a particular review (http://anime.mikomi.org/series/827.html) it does seem a litte disturbing when you read the second review, but if that's the worst that happens and if things are not graphically shown, wouldn't it be appropriate for me?

Is there anything worse in there than the...arm loss in Princess Mononoke? That was graphic, but it didn't disturb me at all.

Another question- things containing blood. What's the worst I'll have to deal with if watching the entire series?

It aired on a station called "Kid's Station", but it's just a general cartoon channel with its own adult-oriented block in the late-evenings just like Cartoon Network in the United States. They don't seem to distinguish the adult-oriented block with a name like "Adult Swim", but it's the same general deal.

Even seeing screenshots, nothing that bad seems to happen. Is it really as sick and twisted as people say it is, even if things are implied and not shown?

I'm a little sensitive with movie ratings, and as most my age have watched an R rated movie, I have not. I think I'd be okay with 15+, wouldn't I? One year above me and all...That's it.

What a dilemma. D: Need adivce.

There's sexual violence, decapitations, and other scenes of brutality involving underaged characters. The most graphic stuff is silhouetted, shadowed, or off-screen, but it's not ambiguous and I wouldn't be comfortable showing it to anyone under the age of 18.

You are the first fourteen year old native English speaker who can write proper English I've ever seen on this website. That alone has proven your maturity when compared with the "average." You have my green light, but for the sake of legality I suggest you watch it together with an adult who's into anime as well. Plus you'll have lots topics to discuss with after finishing the entire series.

Don't laugh. I'm serious.

Seriously, this is an anime that is disturbing for adults. If you're a very mature 14-year-old, you may be able to handle it - but don't see it alone. See it with an adult.

I take that as a compliment. Thank you. o.o Now I'm not quite sure what to do. Some of your comments are creeping me out. I don't want to see sexual violence, but I don't think anything mentally damaging to me would be shown in a series with such a low rating.

What if I watch it with a friend? If I asked an adult to watch it with me (if there was anything terribly graphic in it), I'd never be allowed to download/buy anything again, I swear.

I don't have any friends over eighteen, really, and especially not any into anime. I just want to know, is this is a good series?

Just to prepare myself, I don't care if I hear spoilers. What, in detail, is one of the 18+ worthy, scarring things I'd have to see?

-Sii.

There's atleast something I do not agree with here. A little bit after it finished in Japan, which I believe I may of been probably 14 or 15(and currently 16), I watched the whole series in one run. The thing is, there are many people who are under the age of 18, one being me, who have been able to stumach some of the stuff that was shown in Narutaru. This also goes to things like Gantz and Elfen Lied.

Also, before you ask, I have read the manga, including the scene's in question that may, disturb some people. spoiler[ One scene involving Shiina being completely disembard. If that's the word I'm looking for. Another is the test tube scene, which many probably remember. ] I guess it just depends on the person really, if they can stumach the scene or not.

But I hear the animated version is COMPLETELY different. I know it's less violent.

Still waiting for a few of my questions to be answered. I'm not sure if I should go through with this. It looked so amazingly good, but you guys act as if it's rated R material.

I'd be really grateful if you guys could maybe pitch in some answers to the questions?

Thanks.

BTW: Azzmonkey, you should provide a reason why it's such a terrible show. Many people on the web /highly recommend/ it, so it's a matter of tastes.

Wait a second, isn't Elfen Lied rated R? I've seen some very unpleasant screenshots...And I know it's rated M/R.

ADV rated it MA (Mature Audiences), which is the equivalent of an R or NC-17 rating.

While Narutaru is not explicitly graphic, it is still very disturbing and it makes it quite clear what is happening. The last two or three episodes contain some of the most disturbing material I've ever seen in anime. This is a case where the implied can actually be worse than the explicit.

Very, Very, true I infact had to stop watching this series since I was battleing a bit of a depression and when not in tip top shape it really bothered me heh (not to make myself sound weak) But I stoped before the last 4 episodes..

I'm having trouble imagining that. I don't mind spoilers, as long as, maybe, you could leave out names.

I doubt reading it would frighten me, so could someone please inform me of the whole 'disturbing' concept that seems to lie at the end? I've heard something about a shadow of a head being shown at one point, and then half of it gone in the next shot. That wouldn't bother me. It's silhouetted after all, is it not?

Of course, that would be violence, and you all seem to say that something /worse/ than heavy violence lies in this series. I can't imagine. Maybe it's just preference and mind- I don't like heavy gore. I don't mind seeing blood at all, but seeing a person hacked up is not my cup of tea. Implied, sure, but graphic and close, no. What could be worse?

Is spoiler[the idea of small children killing others in revenge] really the disturbing factor of this anime (I find it quite interesting, the children being able to take revenge on those who've wronged them easily, unlike the typical child who sits there thinking 'I wish they'd die.'), or am I missing the big picture?

Chances are they won't let you finish, unless they are really cool about it.

Nope. I had no problem with that. That seems fairly standard to me. The only difference is, it's treated realistically (i.e. people die) instead like a typical shounen title would (because it's seinan). Nothing really bothered me until the last 3-4 episodes. The spoiler[test tube incident] was just SO wrong.

But, let's summarize:

Plus, one saying he could handle it (there are always exceptions). I'd suggest either getting an adult or waiting awhile. Not that it matters, if you're going to watch it, you're going to watch it. Just be warned.

Either way, don't buy it, rent it. Two reasons: 1) Even if you like it, it may be so disturbing, you won't want to watch it again. Frankly, seeing it once is enough. 2) Graphic content aside, the anime was bad, mostly due to pacing and incoherent-cy. Having read Kitoh before, I expect the manga is pretty good, though. Especially, since I left a note in my personal database that says:

Quote:
You know, if it didn't take half the show to get interesting and had it stuck with that interesting path it would have been real good, despite the character designs.

Which I'm thinking was due to adapting it into a short TV series (...maybe not).
