I have a sneaking suspicion that Best Buy or at least some stores are getting prepared to not sell anime anime.

I went to the local Best Buy here in Shreveport, Louisiana and the normally full anime isle were getting rather bare. I want others to take a trip to the closest Best Buy where they live and check up on the condition of the anime isle there and report back to this thread.

Oh, and not only that some rather unusual pricing... All the Peacemaker Kurogane DVD boxsets (with the manga) were for $6.99, and is $9.99 online, Gundam SEED Vol 1 - $39.99, but the boxset with DVD 1 is $23.99, or even the Gravion Zwei boxset for $15.99, but the regular Gravion boxset is $34.99. These are not sale prices either

Some of the shelves are getting somewhat bare here, although they continually stock new releases. I highly doubt they are going to stop selling anime, but most likely reduce their shelfspace (predicted at Kamikazecon by Matt Greenfield). I'm not sure how yours is laid out, but most of the stores here have an entire aisle devoted to anime. My suspicion is that they stocked up bigtime when the market started expanding and the studios went license happy, and now they realize that there just isn't a market for quite a bit of the crap that has been churned out, so now they are trying to dump stock, before scaling back. (i.e. lower prices on bad or slow sellers, and low selling items [boxes, etc.])

They way they laid it our here is that it is 1/3 of two isles backed up against each other, which is equal to about 2/3 of a isle.

I was going to go check on Suncoast, but the Mall closed as soon as I parked in the parking lot.

I'm going to take advantage of the cheap prices they have some of the stuff I want (Peacemaker Kurogane and Daphne in the Brilliat Blue ($23.99) boxset for a couple of examples) next friday (I get paid Wednesday).

Ghost in the Shell is cheaper on the BestBuy website ($1.00 cheaper) than in the store. Besides, I rather buy from DeepDiscountDVD and other places selling legit R1 DVDs. That also could be the reason for the reduced shelf space - people are buying more anime online than in B&M stores.

And honestly, I've seen so much anime in the last two years, I have created a MSWord file with all of the DVD releases I want to buy, it is currently at 18 pages (landscape - 12pt Verdana, with Date separations)

Example:
DVD Title --------- Episodes ----- Release Date ---- Runtime ---- Studio
    JUNE 1998
    Ranma Movie 1 ------------------- (06/19/1998) ------ 75 -------- Viz
    OCTOBER 1998
    Ranma Movie 2 ------------------- (10/16/1998) ------ 60 -------- Viz
    MAY 2000
    Ranma OVA Boxset -- (1-12) ------ (05/12/2000) ----- 375 -------- Viz

Those dashes aren't actually there, these represent blank spaces. The number of releases per month I want to buy get as high as 31 for the month of July, the busiest so far. However, I can only afford to buy 4 DVDs/releases at the most per paycheck depending on the cost, so it is very difficult trying to choose what to buy. I'm also torn between this and trying to save $1000 to put a down payment on a new Truck in mid September (hopefully on my birthday)

I've run into a similar problem here as well. The Best Buy store here seems to be thinning on what it chooses to carry, not only in general, but new releases as well. It does appear to be getting sparse.

I wonder how this will affect the anime companies themselves financially?

You know, I don't mind buying DVDs online, but there are times I just want to get out and take a look at what a B&M store has. BestBuy doing this makes it more difficult to buy things.

If it's just them trimming down shelf space like I believe, I don't think it would be that big a problem, since it would mean getting rid of poor sellers which are generally not very good shows. (maybe bad news for anyone that likes those shows though) If they were truly planning on killing their anime section, they would have made some sort of announcement by now, in hopes of getting more people into the stores to buy out the section.

Lets hope you're right. It would also help if Suncoast sold anime more along the lines of what BestBuy normally does.

Went to check Suncoast today, their shelves are just as full as usual (However I last went there about a year ago), but they are just as expensive as usual, selling everything at MSRP. Sad

I just got back from the Best Buy in Macedonia, OH (about 15 minutes from where I live) and their anime section was pretty full. Unfortunately, they didn't have some of the newer releases yet so I'm hoping that will change in the near future. Most of the prices were at the 33% discount from MSRP, and they're selling GITS for $18.99.

I don't think that Best Buy will completely phase out anime - they're not Target, thank goodness - but they are scaling back on some of the weaker titles.

The Best Buy in my town isn't as big as those in some of the more populated areas, so they don't really have room to waste. The quarter of an isle they spare for anime was packed, though not to the brim like usual.

I didn't have much time to look at many of the prices, but everything seemed to be like it has always been, relatively cheap (for anime anyway).

Yeah, I've been waiting for Wolf's Rain vol. 7 for ages it seems, and they still don't have it. Lately they've been putting stuff out on the shelf a week early and it was officially released on 5.24.05 Confused, what's up?!

The best buy here in Prescott isn't as big as the one in Roanoke, Va, but last time I checked (Sunday), Best Buy's anime section was just as full as it had ever been, though as usual it was mainly new releases, but that's always been something that's expected.

Best Buy really isn't the best buy if you consider internet sites, but it is helpful if you need your fix right away.

I noticed the Mezzo DVDs discounted too. $6.99 a pop.
This was in Bel Air, MD.

I too doubt BB'll phase out an entire genre.

this is quite strange. I tend to hit multiple Best Buys one a best buy run, and I hit Rockville, Gaithersburg, and Germantown, a week or so ago, and I got there in the middle of restocking the half of a shelf unit (one full side that is) or so they allot for anime, and pricing was about normal. I think they had a couple on sale for less but that's normal.

I retract my first statement about Best Buy not selling anime anymore. When I went to Best Buy today to get a couple of Fruits Basket volumes and the starter set of Please Twins DVD 1, I understood why the shelves were getting thin.

They rearranged everything, the anime is now on the opposite end of the DVD section 1 isle over from the electric pianos, and now both sides are facing each other instead of being on each side of 1 shelf. They still have the same amount of shelving space devoted to anime.

I have also heard that Target is going to scale back it's anime collection until it's no longer. Something about not selling enough...
