I hated it.

Mini-lectures, entertaining or not, shouldn't lodge themselves like foreign objects in what's supposedly a narrative, let alone a series of them that take up like a third of the whole book.

And the discussion of disposing of bodies and vampire myths smells like Oshii wanted to make sure the audience appreciated research he did for his vampire book.

Sounds like typical Mamoru Oshii to me, which isn't a criticism. The only thing he did I didn't care for was Assault Girls (seriously, what was the point of that film?). Thanks for the heads-up about this novel!

Parts of the long discussion with the old man reminded me of Batou's conversation with Kim in Innocence. Like about half of Oshii's works, though, I don't think it holds up terribly well as a standalone novel for someone who isn't already a fan. Not a gateway drug, in other words.

To tell you the truth, I really enjoy the mini-lectures and long conversations Oshii scripts because they are very educational in a way. And I always learn something from his films.

Is this book still in print?

Looks like it is - both Amazon and RightStuf have copies in stock.

When Blood + first came out here, I liked it enough that I tracked down every thing related that I could find. That included this book. I found it to be an engaging read.

I understand what he means about "lectures" but at the time they were just part of the narrative. All of it was interesting enough that it didn't slow me down.

I recommend this.

Cool, might have to look around for this.

Most interesting that you reference Senses of Cinema; one of the lecturers in our cinema department is the features editor. It also just lost its government funding. I believe it will continue to run though I'm not sure how much will be lost.

Hey Brian, there are 15 articles between this one and the last where you mentioned anything substantially Oshii-related by my count. That deserves some kind of reward. Razz

One reader's flight of fancy or, less charitably, pointless digression is another's nugget of wisdom/character development. If it in any way complements or expands the narrative and theme, and the characters' actions affirm that addition, then I'll accommodate it. I might have to check this book out to see if Oshii does just that.
