Looking for information of Moe, its history and its purpose in today's Anime Media. In my own opinion it can be used correctly, but is commonly used as a tool to forcibly pull at heart strings rather then build an emotional attachment to a character.

If you do like Moe, who is your favorite Moe girl, and if you hate Moe, who is the Moe girl you love to hate.

Please explain why you like them/hate them. I'm curious to see who is one what side of that line.

Personally...I think it's the sort of bullshit that's killing anime today.

No need to further comment.

Moe isn't that bad. Hayate no Gotoku and Zettai Karen Children are some of the best comedy anime i've ever seen.

Explain your reasons for thinking so, not that i disagree but it was stated in the thread that your reasons should be stated.

BlazingEdge, you will need to edit your opening post to state your own opinion or you risk the thread being locked. That's always a requirement when asking for peoples' opinions on an issue.

Hmmm.

:3 I guess that means I don't have to state my reason. But it's okay, I'll give you a miniature reason:

I don't like German defecation porn. I find to be completely distasteful, and bullshit....no pun intended. Now...do I honestly have to state any reason why German scheiße porn makes me puke, and lose all hope in humanity?

Exactly. Harsh comparison it may be, but alas effectively portrays how I feel on the subject.

Although a little more colorful than I'd put it John Casey can sum up the point that I feel about Moe shows in the general sense.

I don't feel uplifted or inspired, rather I'm beginning to see it as a distraction or trap I need to endeavor to avoid, as I do not wish to support and does not help me for what I use anime for (Inspiration and thought experiment.)

So I to kind of feel for humanity if distraction is preferred over trying to fix the reality that is.

I think too many people paint moe as black and white.

I don't enjoy watching moe-fest shows but I don't mind watching a show that contains moe-like aspects such as Air & Sora no Woto.

Though I do agree somewhat about the industry thing.
I know the economy is crap & all and Japan is doing whatever means to make money but I think it's time to tone it down a notch with all these moe/harem shows & move on to something else Confused

When it comes to over-doing cuteness, Japan does it best, no doubt about it.

I'm quite confused as to why there is dislike of moe, and the responses here so far are the worst I've seen.

I guess it's because it's not well defined so you like or hate what you think moe is. I guess Casey equates it with lolicon or something whereas I see it as a character type not so unlike tsundere that doesn't necessarily and in fact almost never has any explicit erotic connotations.

Moe is all about vulnerability and growing maturation to me. If anything a moe character makes you want to support or protect that character. It's just classic coming of age stuff with a cute factor. If there's a big fault it is that anime doesn't want to let a moe girl actually reach the end game and actually become mature

For instance, to me the ultimate moe character is Nagisa from Clannad. Vulnerable to the extreme and needs lots of help but is encouraged to better herself. She might have been a success to if she hadn't mostly lost that forward growth and became more a plot point than a character in the course of Tomoya's After Story storyline.

Recently I half jokingly said that Sasami from Tenchi Muyo was moe before moe was cool. I guess that's true, although you see that if pushed she really is quite capable.

But even something so very light like K-On! is still good stuff. Yes, these are super vulnerable girls but part of the point is that they are trying.

Do I like moe? I think it's obvious I do, but I sometimes wish moe shows and moe characters progressed more... but the, would they be moe anymore?

Moe is like anything else done well in anime.
Its like violence. MD Geist...not good. Samurai 7, good {in my opinion}
You have extremely insipid uses of it, like in Geist, but it can also be used well.

And i do dislike being forced to like a character simply because she appears vulnerable it shows that if i were faced by a person in real life similar to her i would be willing to help her.

However this doesn't cover the fact that Moe was originally used as an H game idea so that the player wouldn't feel bad about raping the poor things. But now I'd like to think its evolved to the point where it can used in an area that allows them to just be....

And you can't deny they look cute.

To me, I always looked at moe as it was originally intended to (the "feeling," so to speak) - NOT as a (sub-)genre. It's like how words such as "hentai" and "otaku" are looked at differently here in North America in comparison to Japan. I can't help but feel a little annoyed at how the word is used nowadays.

Hell, technically you can even say that a guy is moe! Anime hyper

But to answer the question, I don't mind it when it's done well. After all, there is a difference between romance/dramas such as Clannad and romantic comedies of the trashier variety. (Not to discredit the romcoms - they do what they're supposed to do.)

I just compared Moe to German shit porn. I think that fairly well qualifies as a "denial of cuteness."

S'yeah. I deny that they look cute. I find them to be exceedingly creepy. Then again, that's just me. I'm a person who's creeped out by 20 year olds who look like 10 year olds getting raped, as well as grossed out by uncreative German sex-addicts who try too hard to be exotic.

I don't like it. It's kind of creepy and it's annoying, cliched pandering that appeals to nobody but otaku. It shrinks the fanbase and it has an annoying habit of leaking over into other genres and shows I might actually want to watch.

So... Is this about right?
"Moe" is a feeling of wanting to protect someone, a kind of mothering instinct.
A moe character is one designed to induce this feeling in the viewer; maybe a young, vulnerable character, perhaps someone who is particularly incompetent and clumsy, or with a disability... etc.
A moe show is one with a lot of moe characters? I guess? Or where the moe aspect becomes a major element of the show?

So, a stray kitten is moe. You're saying kittens are like German porn?
