Interesting how one's work can inspire another so much as to spend such a great deal of money to own such a simple item.

With that much money I could probably pay my boss to be Kagami for the whole summer, or make my own in a lab(I don't how, but I'd find a way).

I have favorite artists that I had paid quite a bit to get my hands on their piece of art, but there's a certain point where I think "I love it, but is it really worth the overtime I put in at work?". Sometime it is, but other times, eh...

Just yesterday, Ryusuke Hamamoto(Petit Eva) did a sketch of Red Arremer for me for free!

I love Naru Nanao's artwork but 1.3m is ridiculous, especially the sketch were free.

I'd call that freakish and "having too much money". But well, at least one COMPTIQ reader now has enough money to get by for some months xD

Wait, so the artist who made the sketch isn't even someone involved with Lucky Star? Yet it sold for more than what most people's cars are worth?

There's an expression that some of my friends and I use to describe moments like this when it comes from the land of the rising sun, but sadly repeating it here would be a rules violation and people would probably take it out of context.

In all fairness, Naru Nanao's artwork is quite revered among otaku as there is so little of it available...then to tag on the cash-cow that is Lucky Star...
Although I do find $14,000 to be a little obscene, I could definitely see myself parting a few hundred for a hand-drawn piece from Naru Nanao, regardless of the subject matter...

MY GOD! Shocked And just when I was starting to think I was morphing into a pretty hardcore otaku, I see this! ...I mean I've been known to dish out a lot of money for a dvd or figure import I'd really wanted... But $14,000!? Where does an anime fan come up with that kinda money!?

That sounds impressive, unless you were at the art auction at Anime Expo 2000 (or was it '99), where a sketch of Madoka Ayukawa by Akemi Takada went for $16,000. At the end, two young internet-boom millionaires were going at it, bidding each other up $1000 at a time.

$14,000 for Moe sketch? Someone really loves Moe to death alright. I'm not sure how much publishers pay for thoroughly drawn & painted Anime cover art, but even they won't pay that much for better drawn artwork. Is it just me or are those bidders blinded by obsession?

That's not really a terribly outrageous sum for an original sketch. Anime Expo's auctions reguarly hit near that amount, if not over. Try looking into the cel world, hanken and other unique or rare pieces can easily go for >$10k.
