Well, 2002 is coming to a close and now would be a great time to look back at the best and the worst as far as anime, music, etc, etc....

For Instance....

ANIME
______
GTO was definitely a surprise. When I first read up about it, it did noit seem like it would be anything worthwhile. That was until I picked up the manga, then I realized what a gem it was.

Then there was the conculsion to the Amuro Vs. Char in MSG Char's Counterattack (a little out of order, where's Zeta and ZZ?), which was actually not too bad.

Finally, EoE. What a POS that was. Once again, thank God I did not drop 20 bucks on that.

VIDEO GAMES
____________
It's kind of a tie as far as my opinion on the best game... Vice City and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 where both outstanding games (espcially Hot Pursuit, since I did not have any high expectations).

Most disappointing... Test Drive (You all thought I was gonna say Robotech here, didn't ya?).

MUSIC
_____
Now I love bands like Korn, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, etc; but I am getting so bored with the whole Nu-Metal trend. Papa Roach, Trust Company, and Disturbed... ALL BORING. The new Korn was OK, but the real surprise of 2002 was Stonesour. Going over to Hip-hop, Jurassic 5 takes the cake (and in my humble opinion Power in Numbers has to be my fav album of this year). Finally, Boxcar Racer wasn't too bad (although like Nu-Metal, the whole pop-punk thing is getting stale too).

Well that is my two cents on the year... Everyone have a happy new year!

Anime
EoE isn't the worst thing out there. Overrated, yes. Bad, no.
Excel Saga debuts on DVD. America loses its sanity.
At last, Utena has come back to DVD!

Games
MK:DA comes out and is easily the best pure fighter out there, even though it is lacking in other game modes (2v2, tournament, etc.).
Kingdom Hearts comes out and turns out to be one of the best games of the year.
PS2 is still tops. Metroid returns. XBox is dead last.
The Sims passes Myst to become the #1 bestselling PC game of all time.

Music
I could care less about the music scene. MTV still sucks. (And radio isn't any better.)

TV/Movies
Firefly debuts but it is later cancelled.
Episode 2 comes out, everyone yawns.
The Two Towers... need I say anything more?
Spider-man casts his web.
Adam Sandler still has a movie career. A mystery that would even baffle Sherlock Holmes.

Anime:
Countless new releases pile up on the shelves, with lower prices and more episodes per disc. More and more obscure series are licensed for release. Fanboys complain.

Video Games:
Several fantastic video games are released, each bringing something new and exciting to the genres they represent. Fanboys complain.

Music:
Anime and game related music becomes available in several markets and outlets, but remains a niche genre. Fanboys complain.

Yeah I forgot about TV and movies....
(Thanks Aya!)
Firefly's departure was a big bummer,
CSI Miami is very cool
Spiderman was good, Attack of the Clones better then Epsode I, but that ain't saying much.

I'm still pissed that I did not see 8 Mile, because That definitely looked interesting.

The worst... Resident Evil and XXX

Congrats Cassandra! (definitely late, I may have missed any previous mention, did I?)

My own review of the year 2002....

Anime & Manga: Tokyopop has proven that backwards is profitable with its 100% authentic lineup. Pity they nearly lost the fan respect they had when they went and changed around Initial D. Adult Swim proved just how much people want anime beamed to their TV sets and is working its way towards becoming a truly unedited block, if Inu Yasha is any indication of trends. Of course, many great releases crowned the year. Everyone had their must sees in each genre. And Miyazaki dazzled us all with yet another masterpiece; Spirited Away. For anime, 2002 was a great year.

Music: Rush on tour with a new album! (YAY!) Cleveland date at Gund Arena sells out in an hour and a half on a school day. (BOO! I wanted to see Geddy Lee!) Stevie Nicks shows why she's still enchanting with her first solo effort since the Fleetwood Mac "The Dance" tour of the mid 90's, and Fleetwood Mac announces a new album and tour for 2003! Sadly, we lost John Entwistle and George Harrison. Two legends silenced.

Movies: Bond is back in an Aston Martin, and all is right in the world. Hayden Cristensen lays waste to the Darth Vader we all know and love by portraying a whiny little brat in Episode II. And, of course, Tolkkien owns Rowling no matter what season or year it is.

Video Gaming: Steel Battalion gives us the chance to pay $200 for the worlds biggest controller and most realistic portrayal of mecha combat ever. Net result? I'm out three paychecks and one card table. Vice City breaks the bank and logs the largest waiting list yet for a video game. Sen. Joseph Lieberman has a heart attack when seeing DOA girls in skimpy bikinis playing volleyball, and Metroid works out as a FPS. Rygar, Shinobi, Defender, and Contra all come out of the archives and burn up their systems, and Animal Crossing turns out to be popular.

TV: Full Metal Challenge stokes Mad Max fans across the globe, South Park is now funny again, and Law & Order's spin-offs remain terminally lame without Jerry Orbach as Lenny Briscoe.

Other News: Ferrari DOMINATES the Formula 1 world championship. Michael Schumacher becomes winningest F1 driver of all time, and takes the record for most wins in a season. Tony Stewart gets to give the traditional NASCAR fan a giant upraised middle finger by taking the Winston Cup championship. (Up yours Dale Earnhardt Jr.) And Ferrari 550 Maranellos worry the factory Corvettes at Le Mans. Forza Cavaillano Rampante!

On a sadder, more personal note, ISMA Supermodified driver and close friend Dion Parrish died testing a new car at Kalamazoo Speedway. The Supermodified world misses Dion. He was a young rookie and one of the nicest guys ever to strap in and push off.

Thankies Wink I dunno that I mentioned her much around here. It's kinda hard to throw in "I had a bebbe!!!" without sounding like I'm going overboard Wink

Of course, that's assuming you were congratulating me on the bebbe and not on the completion of Eva Very Happy

Well, owning all of Evangelion is quite an accomplishment.... Wink

Of course, the birthing of your child. From what I understand (mind you, it's not something I could say from ANY sort of experience) it's a difficult and painful undergoing.

I'm suprised as to just how ubiquitous some of the azudai characters have become in Japan, particularly Osaka and "Chiyo's Dad"..

I'm also very suprised at the Mona (which aren't in AzuDai, but can be found with alarming frequency at Japanese BBS sites like 2ch.net.. and apparently in least one episode of Komugi-chan) and their style has found such a... uh... niche.. in their culture.

As for here... I think that remains to be seen. The fans are willing to spread the gospel of AzuDai... but I don't think there are THAT many azudai fans.

What was the silliest controversy of 2002? I think it probably was the whole Outlaw Star vs. Firefly affair, wherein people saw a single shot of River in a trailer for Firefly that resembled the introduction of Melfina in OLS, therefore the entire Firefly series is a plot point by plot point rip-off of OLS, case closed, though the fuss about the Love Hina review in IGN (and the fuss over the single negative review of Spirited Away from Daily-Reviews.com listed at RottenTomatoes.com) from anime fans who take amusingly written reviews way too personally comes mighty close.

Aya, you forgot John Entwistle on your list. As in the bassist for The Who, John Entwistle.

*sighs* One more great band I'll never get to see in concert. I miss Freddie Mercury most of all, though. This year was the tencth anniversary of his death, as well.
