Same response as from comic book fans or novel fans have to a hollywood adaptation then.

Quote: | Gangs of New York: $77 million. |
Too bad the budget was at least double that amount with P+A.

The budget there was around $110 million. And that doesn't include P+A.

He wasn't the only big name in that film.
everybody: I don't buy him as tough, I don't buy him as heroic, and I don't buy him as a wise-ass narc. Mark Wahlberg has Boogie Nights[which is more effing memorable than Titanic] and a more consistent box office return than Leo.

The capability of DiCaprio as an actor doesn't have that much relevance here anyway, as as we know his role is producing.
GATSU wrote: | Lucca: That History of Violence screenwriter would probably jerk off on the source material and turn it into an Iraq parable the way he turned the AHOV book into a Columbine metaphor. |
Well, all that "jerking off" must have paid off then. "A History of Violence" is anything but a bad film, despite all the deviations from the source material.

This is not going to be a remake. This is an adaptation. They're adapting the manga specifically, which is stated both in the ANN article, and the article over at Variety.
They adapted Infernal Affairs into The Departed, and it worked great. Some might argue that the formal was a better film (of whom I am one), but I really love The Departed. It's set in America. It's about Americans. I can relate better because I'm American.
Well, now they're adapting Otomo's manga, and they're taking the same kind of liberties. They have to. I think it will turn out a much superior film to what they'd get if they tried to reproduce every little thing exactly as it is in the source work. As long as they retain the style, the emotion, the design, and the sheer grit of the original, then it'll be worth my $20 bill.
You know what I really hope this serves to do? I hope this drums up enough interest in the manga that it gets a two-season long anime TV series remake.

You said commercial success, not immediately profitable at the domestic box office alone.

$194 million worldwide box office, with more in DVD sales.

Just the top-listed name in the ads and posters. Domestic and foreign.
By the way, $290 million worldwide box office, with more in DVD sales.

Uh, you're not thinking internationally. Regardless of acting prowess, the international box office take of Wahlberg's (underappeciated) movies on average is far below DiCaprio's.

At least this thread has a refreshing lack of "more like leo diCRAPio!! i am a comedy master" in it.

I don't think this will work out. Too many variables are mucking up the idea. Do they really have to "Americanize" the plot?

GATSU, I bet the next thing you're going to say is if Leo wasn't cast in the movie Titanic, it would've brought home 12 academy awards.
Maybe you're really Gene Shallit in disguise?

No it didn't. The Departed had nothing to do with the source material, and was boring as hell to boot.

No, they don't. They just want to. There's a difference.

Commercial successful means that the guy has big opening weekends, not small opening weekends with gradual profitability.
testor:

Too bad it probably cost at least $120-$140 million with P+A. Not helpful for an R-rated film.
Quote: | $214 million worldwide box office, with more in DVD sales. |
It still cost at least $150 million with P+A.
Quote: | Just the top-listed name in the ads and posters. Domestic and foreign. |
Just posters. Nicholson and Wahlberg got the ads.
Quote: | By the way, $290 million worldwide box office, with more in DVD sales |
Again, not due to Leo alone.
Quote: | Uh, you're not thinking internationally. Regardless of acting prowess, the international box office take of Wahlberg's (underappeciated) movies on average is far below DiCaprio's. |
The average might be smaller, but his budgets are smaller as well, which means his name gets a greater return sooner.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. Zac is right, all they've done is put it in America so it's relatable to Americans. I'm kind of excited to see what kind of work they can produce. They are making two movies; there's already a chance that it'll be a lot closer to the source material than even the original movie was. I love the original manga, and the movie, and I'm quite curious as to what new life can be brought into this kind of adaptation.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are watching a debating goalpost-mover in his native habitat. What's funny is the latest goalpost-move is still wrong.

It's pretty sad that they don't think Americans can only watch films set in America. It's crap like this which makes us seem like xenophobic dicks. Then again, Japan is no prize in that category either.
