You know, "South Park" recently had an episode where Donald Trump was raped to death because of his political ideals. Where's the outrage over that? Oh, but Gamergate gets namedropped in a dub as a passing joke, and everybody loses their minds. |
There was some outrage, but the difference being that South Park's message was intentional ( and hilarious). Funimation changed the original product. I don't particularly care about Prison School or gamergate (aside from my disgust with the misogyny and death threats from both sides) but it's understandable for fans of the show to be a little annoyed.

I'm not sure I get your point (or you're not getting mine). I wouldn't be for South Park being changed just as I'm not for Funimation changing Prison School. I'm just not very passionate about it because I'm not a fan of Prison School.

I am watching only the dub and the original lines is "I am your senior!" or something like that, however, I suppose I am more forgiving with Jamie Marchi for the situation. That is because, Tyson's Twitter entries about it, to me, seem arrogant.

Quick, someone link me that Princess Bride meme.

I really done think a bunch of people united around a hashtag is an organisation, like any other largely anonymous online movement like, well, Anonymous.

It's at least the second time you've said that, and I'm pretty sure they are. Lines are changed all the time for dubs (and subs) and people get annoyed about it, but it rarely generates this much furore. I can see at least one user who is clearly a supporter and has created an account just to post in this thread. Where were they when thousands of other dubs got pop culture reference or generally non-literal translations?

That's always a problem in translation, due the entirely different ways of referring to people in Japanese and English.
Set1229 wrote: | Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't there times where some shows had lines that were controversial in Japan that had to be bleeped out in anime comedies at one point? |
I'm only aware of that being scripted. In the case of Shimoneta, there were complaints that is was too clear what the original word was.

General responses to this subject seem to be on both sides. The sub fans will like the subs and the dub fans will prefer the dubs, nothing wrong with both.
I guess the general consensus concerning this change is that the source material was changed so drastically in the first place. Whether you prefer sub or dub, I'm sure we could all agree that changing the line from the original to something that has a completely different meaning wasn't the right way to go.

People running off at the mouth to shove their opinions at people while crying foul as they berate other people for having a differing opinion is hardly just an ANN tradition. It's an internet tradition. Especially on topics where in morality or suggestive ideas come into play. This is just par for the course.

Well I know that. I'm just saying it took time for me to notice it was becoming a regular thing here too.

Imbeciles who waste or prolong more time and/or energy on comment(s) or page(s) on trivial debate(s) then they ought to, pretty much end up becoming just as trivial as the numerous page(s), comment(s) and debate(s) themselves.
Prison School is just a work of fiction and niche comedy anime that is lacking in depth and is not void of cons that does not deem it praise or defense worthy in the slightest (though most certainly PS is not a horrible or bad anime either. Decent, good, or great, subjective however) like Rurouni Kenshin Trust & Betrayal, Ouran, Galactic Heroes.
Neither will it ever be a Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell, Mobile Suit Gundam, Dragon Ball Z, Astroboy, etc that's going to alter the anime industry in some way due in part to one line that's as meager as Nonon's "Nani Sore!?/What's That Supposed To Mean!?" and the many anime transitioning "itadakimasu!/Time To Dig In!" which time has already gradually forgotten and did not oppose any one living breathing organism in a negative light. So make of it as you will.

People that are strongly opinionated on either the dub scriptwriter's insertion of #gamergate, and #gamergate generally - ought to show a little bit of balance.
First, the line was delivered to the effect of "You aren't one of those Gamergate not-so-nice-people, are you?", by a sexualized (and dominatrix, not-so-sympathetic) character, in a show that was as push-the-limits-ecchi as there can be. A show that has been criticized by people who are nominally anti-gamergate, if the Sarkeesian argument that there is too much male-testosterone fan-service in games (and by extension, film, anime, whatever) and too little honest and "respectful" portrayals of women. So the line has ambiguity. Are "those Gamergate not-so-nice-people" not-so-nice-people? If so, the scriptwriter was throwing them an ironic bone. Second, although the scriptwriter went overboard on Twitter to reject the criticism, he also responded with "that's fair" when people leveled fair criticisms, that it broke with continuity for people for whom Gamergate is a trigger-word, and went beyond the original scripts intent.
But more generally, if you're going to be fair, you have to distinguish between genuine not-so-nice-people that appropriated the #gamergate tag and said and did some vile, criminal things (thereby tarnishing the whole concept), and those that are dead-serious about not wanting gaming (or any other media) to be controlled/pressured by people who care about social justice, as if the market that appeals to adolescent, puerile boys is uniquely misogynistic. Recall that the whole thing, the -gate of it all, is that the gaming press colludes with the developers they cover. It happens, it happened, and it is itself one reason why the market doesn't naturally adapt to meeting the needs and wants of girls, who probably don't like GTA V, and might like Depression Quest or whatever.
The good side of #gamergate is that there really is a "war on boys" and the objectifying gaze of normal heterosexual dudes in any number of places. Gawker Media (which shames women and men with equal animus) manages to tell us how the future of toys and games is non-gendered, while celebrating porn culture and giving glowing reviews of GTA V (and other things which are not universally loved by people who care about social justice.) The righteous side of #gamergate, a vast majority of people who would never dare to mistreat women, let alone call in death threats - simply wanted to push back on the idea that studios should cave to #antigamergate just because that became the politically correct thing to do.

You Know A late reply to an old topic - so lets call it a retrospective on the event (i followed this when it originally happened but wasnt a member on these forums yet), but it's genuinely amazing how many people are willing to completely ignore
1: an unprofessional and unnessicary translation
2: an unprofessional writer mocking the userbase
3: Not even so much as an apology for having an employee on behalf of the company doing this.
Just because they dont like GG. Im GG, and while i could really care less what the opinions are regarding the topic (As long as you're not spouting that GG is a bunch of sexists rhetoric.... which is exactly what #NotYourShield was for) but at the least acknowledge the unprofessional and despicable behavior of the Script writers, staff and everyone else involved.
How would you feel if a scriptwriter in a Dub shoehorned "You must just be a no-good creepy Allahu Akbaring Muslim like Obama" into a script when the original line was "you look like you're up to no good"? Even worse when people complained the writer tweets Sorry for pissing off a bunch of no good commies, /sarcasm well thats essentially what happened. and notice my use of that key word, "shoehorned?" the dub was botched by shoehorning a political message into something that should have been devoid of it.
I also find it funny how in this entire thread, the anti-GGers came off as the most foul people here. Literally flinging insults around, when the people who are pissed about the line (GG and even neutrals) just dont want politics to reach their anime that shouldnt have politics in it?
And as a sympathizer to GG i can most ceertainly say, there is nothing wrong with being upset because content was altered to match a political agenda for a project like this. This isnt Shin-Chan or Ghost Stories, people buy this product expecting a somewhat competent and faithful translation. And it's even more frustrating as a person who does support funimation and their dubs. I Went out of my way to buy FMAB when i heard they were about to lose the license, i went out of my way to buy the first 3 collection Boxes for One piece (eps 1 to 299) and the entirety of YuYu Hakusho TWICE (dvd and bluray) I love dubs but this shit here is despicable, and as a grown consumer i should be able to voice my disatisfaction of a product without being called a person unable to get a girlfriend or a rapist/rape apologist by a company representative.
