unit: They've actually released this in theaters here before, but on a retrospective basis. Never 'wide'. Or at least wide by its standards, anyway.

Yay definitely going to go see this on the big screen and since it is G-kids I know it will be playing at my favorite theater.

Only Yesterday is definitely an underappreciated masterpiece.

I actually had a feeling that Only Yesterday would finally get a dub after GKids released When Marnie Was There. Might as well push out the last bits of Studio Ghibli's filmography that never saw a US release now that the studio won't be producing films for the foreseeable future.
Now we just need Ocean Waves and the collection will be complete.

Bad choice of words?
But seriously, I rewatched it a couple of months ago, after not having seen it since around '96, when I was in my mid-20's. This definitely plays better if you're the main character's age or older.

Very excited to hear this news. Here is hoping they also license I can hear the ocean. Has Disney confirmed a release of My Neighbor the Yamadas on Bluray?

unit: It's because of the Oscar nomination for Kaguya. It made Only Yesterday a viable sell here.

Again, that's not why they're doing this for Only Yesterday. See above.
So if you're hoping for Ocean Waves, then cross your fingers that Only Yesterday does reasonably well on home video. As for On Your Mark, I keep hoping Ghibli will listen to me, and donate proceeds from it to our anti-drug and/or drug treatment organizations, so we can finally get it on home video, too.
Evil: It's probably in the pipeline.

If they change the ending music in anyway it's dead in the water. without that it will make no sense at all and only have half an impact.

Got this on a blank VHS tape when TCM did a Ghibli marathon years ago. Didn't really click with me the first time I saw it, going to have to give it another viewing some day.

I actually fell asleep in the middle of this movie the first time I saw it but then I re-watched it and appreciated what a great movie it was. After that, I re-watched it and re-watched it again and again and again. I never got tired of re-watching it and it was just recently that the ending really got to me. It's my 2nd favorite Ghibli right behind Whisper of the Heart.

WHOO HOO! SCORE ANOTHER FOR THE UNRELEASED CLASSICS!
Also, I'll be the first to point out it's Dev Patel, not Dev Pate.

Now instead of having to spend $50+ on the Japanese Blu-ray, I can just wait till 2016 for this most-likely-going-to-happen release! I'll keep my U.K. DVD if this new release doesn't have the U.K. DVD's extras.
I saw Only Yesterday last year at 18 and holy guacamole, Batman!
It REALLY makes me want to read the original 4-panel cartoons. Any company! Translate and publish all of them in the U.S.! JUST *clenches hand* DO IT.

Could've just quoted my post and then explained it rather than say "Again", as if I should've seen your post that was made hours after mine before I posted.
But no, I still think this would've happened even if Kaguya hadn't been nominated. It's the only theatrical Ghibli film still unreleased in the US, there's no Ghibli films in production for the next several years, might as well cash in one more time.
