Kodansha may have a three-month gap, but how many active titles does Kodansha have compared to Viz?

I don't really think that's the issue. Viz were pumping out four volumes of Naruto each month at one point so I don't think there's a problem with them being able to release content quickly.

I'm pretty sure the Naruto (as well as Bleach and One Piece) catch-ups were before doing digital, which made it easier for them to release multiple volumes in one month.

The main reason for the timing is Viz has not completed the physical release of Naruto. Last month only saw the release of vol. 70 out of 72 volumes. Naruto 72 will be released in Oct. 2015, so they can't release Naruto The Seventh Hokage, till readers get the original's conclusion. Winter 2016 sounds right on schedule.

Yeah, My Hero Academia is not getting the two-volume catch-up, even though it'd be a pretty easy one.

From what I can gather with Viz, if they're behind, once they get started, they get going pretty quickly. Assassination Classroom has a volume released twice as quickly as the source material. I think the long turnaround time with Naruto is either spacing out of Naruto-related releases or for contractual reasons, to get every duck in a row before they proceed forward.
