Cinderella is Cenicienta in all Spanish-speaking countries, so if the movie premiered here in Latin America or Spain and Lily James tweeted about it, Asian people would have been enraged because she dared to mock our culture and language.
Yes, that's how stupid it is. |

1. Stand near a sign with the writing being as approximately close to the original title name in the original language as possible
2. Write on social media how said title is pronounced in that foreign language 3. Public outrage. What? Am I missing something here? In Japanese, the movie Cinderella is written シンデレラ (Shi-N-De-Re-Ra). Even IMDB as that spelling in its database for the Japanese title. It could've been that she wanted to do a gesture of goodwill, asked how to pronounce the movie title in Japanese, and wrote it on Instagram. Footnote: I think that a closer transliteration would be スィンデレラ (Su-i-N-De-Re-Ra; pronounced as Sinderera). It is possible. |

I have to ask, how is this newsworthy? I mean sure it's interest, but as I agreed with some people it's over-blown and finding accusation of racism and this doesn't look racist in my opinion. This is more like a parody of how Japanese saying English title in their language.
Not to soapbox but if ANN is going to report on racism what about this: PM Abe's ex-adviser praise and advocate Apartheid and calling for an Apartheid-style segregation in Japan (other sources: Reuter, Japan Times, The Daily Beast) Just today, I saw this on Debito. I guess it's horribly racist when I refer to a 2007 KyoAni show as Raki Suta.

To be fair, I don't think a handful of tweets qualifies as a "movement," except perhaps of the bowels. Whether or not one agrees, it's shouldn't be difficult to understand how the phenomenon could be considered sexist, but the racist part seems rather untenable. That's why I don't like tumblr, outrage culture should be banned from media.

I don't think this counts as racism even if she is making fun of their inability to pronounce Cinderella properly. The definition of racism is believing yourself superior due to your race. Heck I make fun of Japanese pronunciations quite a lot because let's face it, it's a little funny, but do I think of myself as superior? No, not at all. My pronunciation of Japanese is just as bad as their English and if they started making fun of my pronunciations then I wouldn't blame them, heck I'd laugh with them.

Well, maybe her quote was intolerantly bullying the Japanese... |

Another example of political correctness gone haywire. I'd tell you a joke, but then the Irish, the Scots, the English, the Belgians and the Gallegos would be offended (along with the Jews, the Muslisms and a whole host of other minorities). |
