The title kind of says it all. As an HDTV owner I cant help but want to watch movies like Howls Moving Castle and see it un-pixelated because its an SD formate. I almost 100% thats a no for the States, but what about Japan?

Not currently in the US but Bandai Visual plans on releasing Freedom in HD-DVD and in normal DVD format. As for Japan I don't know exactly where to check for that seeing as how I don't import too many disc, considering there way too expensive. Edit: Here's the con report that said that Freedom will be released in HD-DVD, on June 29. |

Japan has already put out a Bluray version of Innocence, with English subs.
Bandai Visual in Japan are also planning on releasing a launch line of Bluray combo discs, whihc include Jin Roh, Akira, Patlabor and others. They'll cost roughly 9,800 yen, doubtful if they have English subtitles, but will look and sound amazing, more than likely. Various series such as Macross Plus and Evangelion have HD masters existing, however aren't on any HD formats as of yet. This will happen eventually, though, so don't worry. |

Well that is if HD-DVD manages to hang around long enough, I am starting to wonder if blue ray has won the war...considering lots of retailers are starting to pump the HD-DVD attachment for 360. One thing I remember was that there was at one point a listing for Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society in a blue ray format (R1) but Bandai claims this was mistake although several retailers were taking preorders on it. |

Good to know things are movin in that direction, I've heard nothing about it really so I was starting to wonder if we'd ever see it.
Now if only this annoying next-gen DVD formate war would just end. You know I bet thats why there is so much hold up. |

There is a thread here on the topic:
animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=29452 Current updates from Japan followed by overall dvd ranking. BluRay 1 Casino Royal #53 2. Pirates 2 #108 3. Pirates 1 #110 4. Eragon #153 5. Paprika #290 6. Innocence #371 7. GITS #441 8 Superman Returns #678 9. Patlabor #751 10. Departed #802 HDDVD 1 Deep Impact #3426 2. Enter the Dragon #3942 3. Training Day #4348 4. Taking Lives #4438 5. Superman 2 #4552 6. 中央競馬G1レース 2006総集編 #5643 (horse racing?) 7. Chicago/Earth Wind Fire #5766 8. Brave Story #6012 9. Honneamise #6264 10. Bullitt #8922 Funny how there are nine titles from the BR list that I'm considering buying, while there are only two from the HDDVD list. HDDVD has barely been able to keep five titles in the top 5000 DVDs at amazon.jp. I'm starting to lean towards BD at this point as well even though things are not as dismal for HDDVD in the States, I think the ratio here is 70/30 in favor for Blu-Ray, with HDDVD having the cheap player ($400-600 vs. 600-1200) advantage. This lead will disappear as both formats will drop in price. There are also more anime studios that are signed up for BR, including Disney/Ghibli who is BR exclusive. |

Having the PS3 include a blue ray player made all the (in the format war, but's it's going make the PS3 last this generation) difference, and I am sure Sony's alright with losing one battle in order to control the format for this next generation.

I'm pretty sure come Christmas time there will be some decent deals on PS3 seeing as how there going to need something to bring people in. Especially with the 20GB system isn't no longer available, I would have to wonder if a price drop will happen. |

On Amazon.jp, there are 24 anime BD-DVD's listed while there are only 5 HD-DVD's. Of those HD-DVD's, all of those are also available on BD-DVD.
(just a note, Amazon's anime section includes any kind of animated work including Disney's movies) Along the same lines, HD-DVD has zero support from the music labels. The only music ones slated for release are actually American discs. |

So, let's see. We have Toshiba and SONY, which anti-consumer format will I pay through the nose for? I think I'll just settle for giving them both the finger and move on.

The PS3 is a great Blu-Ray player (I just watched Memento a couple of hours ago) and I bought mine for that primary reason. Although I have a sizeable BR collection the only game I own is Motor Storm since most of the good PS3 games are available for the PC as well. The PS3 just can't compete with a good Core 2 Duo and a DX10 card. Despite the lack of IR, no upscaling, and the fact that the machine is almost as noisy as an Xbox 360 this still gets my recommendation for BR players. I might consider the Pioneer if they were the same price, but the PS3 costs half as much. Although I have no issues against HDDVD, there just hasn't been any exclusive titles that I would by a player for. I noticed that most people who own an HDDVD player tend to also own a Blu-Ray player which explains the high ratio of sales for HDDVD exclusive titles like Serenity and Batman Begins. These two titles along with the Matrix is almost enough for me to pick up a player, but I think I'll wait until Freedom is released in the States. Most home theater enthusiasts have been fairly neutral in the format war and have either bought both or neither and hope to see this whole mess resolved. If you go to avs.com you will see most of the members list how many BR and HDDVD titles they own in their sig. |

I'm not sure what studio Serenity came out of, but there is a BD release planned for the Matrix, and I'm 99% positive that there's one planned for Batman as well |

I think the hentai title Maid in Heaven came with an HD DVD (and was like the first R1 anime to be in this format)...
Yeah... I found the fact that I couldn't watch that disc pretty amusing. |
