Again. You see the pages from Blade of Immortal. You see the pages from Zombie Samurai. What does it matter what the source is? |

It doesnt have to be a carbon copy to be plagiarism. The probablities of one author coincidentally matching another so closely SEVERAL times are ridiculously small. I doubt anyone would mind if the theme and setting were radically different, but considering there are NOT then its clear this was plagiarism.

This isn't just here-say people... come on now... look closer at the images and the story he cooked up. Then ready a synopsis of Blade of the Immortal. This "artist" took Blade of the Immortal and changed a few details in hopes no-one would figure it out. Well it didn't work. It was discovered rather quickly.
http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?folder_id=1629713 This link clearly shows the same images from 2 separate volumes of Blade of the Immortal and then lays them out as did the artist did. The third image then overlays the 2. This isn't just "borrowing" ideas...This is out-right plagiarism. There is no here-say. There is no "questionable" news source. There is only one dishonest person trying to get famous for someone else's work. Not cool. I'm very disappointed.
First off if LJ posts that someone committed a crime, and upon investigation it was correct and the crime was committed. Then it mean LJ is a reputable source in this case. In this instance someone reported a crime, upon further investigation of the evidence it was proven correcet. Thus making the source legitimate. You can't take a source and throw it into one barrel and judge it instantly doing so means you could miss the opportunity of a life-time. Bravo for the editors for finding and posting this as quickly as they did. My second problem with your post, and many of the posts on Anime forums in general is the use of grammar. Right and write are 2 different words. Someanything is not a word that I could find in any dictionary I checked. Please people use proper english. It only takes a minute to recheck what you wrote to make sure it makes sense, and is correct. It only makes us a culture, and as fans even more simple-minded when people ignore the rules of the language we speak. Fans FLIP out when someone spells their favorite characters name in a series incorrectly, or when someone makes an error in a subtitle. Take the same pride in your own language, and how you present yourself in the written language. It disappoints me that no-one takes our own language that seriously. |

This is funny and sad that someone thought they could get away with copying a manga.
Of course, let's not forget that American comic artist Rob Liefeld basically made a career of doing crap like this. Grrrr...
Thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one offended by the assault on the English language on message boards. Now I myself am typing poorly and noticing some typos as I type. Yet I try to go back and fix them. The only time I do think it's ok is when English is not the native language. I must give the poster some credit for trying to speak a new language. Lord know I have a hard enough time typing English myself. -Xenos |

Yeah, actually I do. It's my job, I have the numbers several people at every US anime company on my phone, including the cell phone numbers for most the people I deal with at those companies. Its not really anything special, it's like you having your banker's number on your phone. -t |

This Hendra person should feel deeply, deeply ashamed. I hope (s)he never writes or draws again. What a LOSER!
[Do not type in bright colours. Standard text only, please. -Nagi] Nagi, if I should only type in standard, why is red text an option??? Is it meant only for emphasis, like bold text? Last edited by Kimyo on Sat Mar 18, 2006 6:13 pm; edited 1 time in total |

An artist should take pride in ones own work...not steal someone elses. Shame... |

You call "rather quickly" being discovered when they have already become a "finalists"? Rather quickly should be almost as soon as the entry is submitted. I don't want to say the staff in charge of reviewing these entries are slackers or don't know their material, they obviously found the mistake, but if they are gonna hold events/contests like these, they SHOULD expect plagirism. But maybe I'm being too hard on them considering how many manga's are actually "out there". It's not like they can sue the guy, or girl, so I think the question is; "What should be done to prevent this in the future?" |

Well, it is 'rather quickly' compared to the a manga artist who published many volumes of material before being caught.

This is pretty bad.
It's pretty obvious that Samurai Zombie lifts many ideas (and panels) from Samura's Blade of the Immortal. The panel riffs were unfortunate enough, but the similarities between the plots just cannot be ignored. If Hendra Wahjudi just had a story about an "immortal, blood-seeking swordsman", then we could just lump in Wahjudi's work with the hundreds of novels and comics that have had something similar. Sadly, Wahjudi went a step further by having that swordsman be a samurai who has to "lift his curse" with the slaying of "one-thousand people". And not just any curse. Nope. A curse that basically makes him, uh, "immortal". Whoops. As a creative, I know all too well how difficult it is to strike gold with a new and different idea that no one has seen before. It's a challenge. And a challenge I look forward to taking on each day. That said, I'm not making *any* excuses for Hendra Wahjudi. None. However, not knowing anything at all about the person, I can't judge if this was just honest ignorance or willful intent. I might be a combination of both, for all I know. Still, the entry should be pulled or re-evaluated, at the very least, by TP. And Wahjudi should go back to the drawing board and try again. Hell, it's not like "samurai" and "zombies" have never been combined before in some way, shape or form (re: Versus). If Wahjudi wants to create an original work with those elements, then it could probably be done. The challenge and the reward is finding out how. |

*sigh*
Y'know, Rob Liefeld and Yuki Suetsugu are not the kind of people you really want to be emulating in the comics field. (The difference of course being that Suetsugu at least apologized and cooperated.) |
