If you get the Japanese Weekly Jump it's got a fairly wide range of stories (even if they do somehow all end up as fighting tournaments).
The US version is a razor thin slice of that aimed straight between the eyes of preteen boys. I realize that is the primary focus of Shonen Jump in Japan, but they also realize females and adults are still reading and cater to us as long as it doesn't compromise the primary audience.
The US version doesn't. I let it lapse when both Bleach and Naruto went completely loltastic. Yugi-oh was always stupid, and that leaves... One Piece (Oda-sensei manages to avoid the failure of success) or whatever the current backup series is, like Stan Lee trying to do manga.
Hey Viz. Preteen boys don't have all that much spare money and know how to pirate content online.

The unwritten joke here is that it's suddenly going to be a lot harder to get Jump manga in any timely fashion if you're, say, not American.

Lots of hate here...
I must admit to being a bit steamed
upon hearing this news myself...
However whilst I too would rather
have the actual magazine in my hands,
what I won't miss is when I can't afford
to renew and have to wait forever to buy it,
because some brat poached the yu-gi-oh card
from it on the walmart shelf...
Viz has told me personaly that they're talking
to konami 'bout the yu-gi-oh promos...
And for the yu-gi-oh haters:
you're not required to like the same things
as others...
I will take Jump Alpha with a grain of salt,
and see how it does...
I already know I can't afford Japan's
Weekly Jump (I once had a 6mo. subscription)...
So how 'bout everyone just take a deep breath,
because in all reality, this is NOT the end of Jump
in the US, but rather it's transition to another plateau...
Smile, after all, you could be paying $500+ for just half-a-year
for it, right ?....

So far the Cons outweigh the Pros . . .
For one thing, not everyone has a credit card to pay for these subscriptions.
Would Gift cards be a viable alternative in this instance?

You can write to Viz right on their facebook page,

In this day and age in the US? Welfare recipients have computer access at home nowadays. May be state dependent.

This simply doesn't settle well with me at all..what the hell is wrong with Viz..Shonen Jump has been apart of my life for almost a decade..hell I discovered manga through Shonen Jump when I was 14 years old many moons ago..its quite obvious that Viz doesn't give a damn anymore..it was nice knowing you Shonen Jump.

Why are people acting like they've cancelled print runs of an individual series' volumes? If you actually liked a series enough to collect various issue of Shonen Jump, why not by the volumes? Nothing is changing there.
This is a lot better than giving me a few chapters from two or three years ago.

Getting a prepaid credit card is as easy as going to Walgreens or Wal-Mart.

Pifft. I never read the magazines anyway. Why pay $9.00 for a single chapter in a magazine, with only about one series I like in it, when I can buy the coleclected volume for only a dollar or two more?

I have mixed feelings on this. For one, I can understand why Viz went that way. In Japan, Weekly Jump is everywhere and sells well enough to justify the high cost of mass publication. With digital, the cost of print is eliminated and I think with the increasing saturation of eReaders and tablets, Viz is probably thinking there'll be less rick and more profit as people adapt to the idea. The fact that they are going weekly with some titles too is a good one.
But I'd be lying if I said I was completely happy about it. For me, it's not so much about holding the print copy as it is the social aspect of buying the magazine at the store. It didn't happen often, but it was a neat conversation starter on a few occasions when I would pop into a local grocery store to grab a new volume. Yes, I know you can still buy the bound volumes in a bookstore (although now my Borders is gone and my B&N is always a few weeks behind), but it is kind of disappointing to see that aspect go.
And I'm totally not bitter about the fact that it probably won't be available on my Kindle Wi-Fi!!

So sad! I don't read Shonen Jump anymore, but I loved it so much as a teenager and subscribed for several years. Well, it's been fun, Shonen Jump, thanks for all the good times!

This move is so stupid, and it's gonna blow up in their face. Why would would anyone want to read digital manga chapters two weeks behind, when they can get scanlations two or three days behind? Where's the incentive? It's just more proof that these people don't get it.
