I'm sorry but I'm amazed that people are stunned that there is pushback to an industry which has been revelling in pushing out more and more semi-pornographic material.
Did the industry not consider the consequences of pushing the limits with material like Yosuga no Sora, Queen's Blade and Seikon no Qwaser? And don't even get me started on the josei smut that is printed regularly....
Its also funny to watch the amazing reactions of the weeabos here who apparently do not realize that despite these sort of restrictions already being in place for other material, that material is still available and easily perused at your local convenience store in Tokyo.
But panic more, its hilarious to watch.

You're an idiot. The law is set up in the most vague way it could be, allowing the government to essentially place a restriction on anything they don't like. This exudes beyond porn. "Damaging to youth." Why don't you, with your vast wisdom, who was able to sum up this fiasco in two sarcastic sentences, explain what "damaging to youth" is.

How does this law effect the distribution of older titles? Does Japan have something similar to ex post facto, or are companies going to have to recall and release edited versions of older shows to conform to the new regulations?

that's different....that's just failure to ensure sales are being done properly...this law is attacking pretty much every fetish that isn't just plain "Normal" stuff. it's biased. the problem is the government doesn't seem capable of figuring out fact from fiction like otaku's can.
just because you dont like yosuga no sora, queen's blade (Which is actually doing pretty well in the US...), ect...doesnt make them pure evil bad things.
restricting things you dont agree with without actual proof it's harmful is just ignorance at it's worst. if they had ANY proof at all to show that the things this bill restricts actually ARE harmful i wouldnt be commenting at all, but there's no proof.

I'm kinda curious how Death Note will survive this. The bill barred more than just hentai situations, Death Note pretty much contains all of the non sexual stuff that the bill was aiming to ban like glorifying murder and other illegal acts as well as being easily accessible to children. But more than anything it has already been linked to several real world crimes including murder. We'll see what happens, I'm not even sure if an 18+ sticker is enough in this case.

This is what I am told by my Japanese friends. They think that most of the anime produced nowadays is embarrassing. Especially the late night stuff that is fanservice focused and features incest themes. They want shows like Yamato to come back. At this point, a lot of them are worried about how other countries view their culture based on "otaku" exports, and think that westerners might get the wrong idea about them.
Of course, this is what my little group of friends tell me. They even think I'm a little overboard in my collecting, though they (mostly) think what I like is pretty ok.

I have read somewhere it affects ALL works, past, present and future that could conceivably be subject to regulation. If an older title can't be edited because its production studio no longer exists but no one else is authorized to make changes, that title will just have to be removed from shelves, circulation, etc. Or sold as an adult title.

@Kougeru I'm sorry, but you failed to understand what I said. This is unsurprising based on your raping of the english language.
What I said was that when the industry pushes the limits with soft porn, it will be treated as porn. To expect otherwise was foolish.
Japan is an incredibly conservative country. The fact that this surprises ANYONE shows how limited the knowledge of the culture actually is at this website.
I'm sorry but the anime lied to you. Japan is not heaven. It is flawed and imperfect just like everywhere else. It certainly not a nice place to not conform to its rather limited societal norms.

I don't agree with everything that Kyaa said, but he's 100% right about this. I've read up on Japan enough to know that it's not this place of complete and unwavering tolerance for every lifestyle or fetish under the sun, as anime may lead you to believe. In fact, it's quite the contrary to a great extent.
Anime reflects Japan about as well as Star Trek reflects America.

The way that the likes of Ghibli and Shueisha have basicly said "We're not paying one wit of attention to this law" by their responses suggests they will continue publishing/creating their works and if it ends up on the top shelf at the local WH Smiths then so be it.
That said, the way that this got though, on the last minute agenda for a session and without proper consultation will come and bite the ass of the Assembly.
Wither that comes in a future election or from Tokyo being Economically compromised remains to be seen.
Because if Shintaro Ishihara wants a return to Glorious Nippon, he'll get a return to Glorious Nippon, with all that comes with it.

You know this may come as a shock.. but English isn't everyone's first language, especially on a site like this. Their ability to use it isn't really a good indicator of their intelligence. Also don't go saying stuff we don't want to hear at a time like this!

Anyone know what the vote breakdown was? I.E. did 51% of the assembly vote yes, or was it more like 80%?
