Gonzo to Adapt Lauded SciFi Novel

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
GDH has announced that it got the rights to use highly popular SF novel "Murdock Scramble" by To Ubukata, and that preproduction is already underway.

To Obukata's novel "Murdock Scramble" won 1st price at the Japanese SF award in 2003. The three-book special edition by Hayakawa Publishing has sold over 160,000 units.

The scenario for Gonzo's adaptation will be written by Ubukata himself. Yasufumi Soejima, who has worked on "Animatrix" and "Gankutsuou", will direct. Release is planned as an OVA at the end of 2006. Beside the Japanese market, the creators want to keep the western audience in mind.

For this work, Gonzo is expected to fully incorporate 3DCG, which Gonzo is very well known for. This will be the first time Gonzo uses 3DCG for facial expressions. According to GDH, the 3DCG won't be used as seen in western productions, but in a way adapted to Japanese tastes.

Tou Obukata is known for more than SF novels, he wrote the story of the manga Pilgrim Jaeger and worked in game production. He also wrote the scenario for parts of the anime series Sōkyū no Fafner: Dead Aggressor.

Editor's Note The Title of the original novel, and the anime, is in fact "Mardock Scramble".
