A Slime Draws Near!... on Your Dinner Plate

posted on by Eric Stimson
New curry adds splash of blue to the menu

Slimes, those dopey, smiling blue blobs, are the iconic characters from the Dragon Quest series of video games, and have become familiar mascots around Japan, thanks to their simplistic cuteness. Usually you see them in plushie form, but Village Vanguard, a quirky bookstore chain based in Nagoya, is now offering Slimes in curry form.

Slime Curry is a ready-to-eat chicken-flavored curry with onions, carrots, garbanzo beans, peas, adzuki beans and shiitake mushroom powder. It might sound like ordinary Japanese curry, but it's been dyed a lurid blue-green color to evoke the recurring Dragon Quest enemy. Sadly, the eyes and mouth are not included; you'll have to recreate them yourself. The curry will be available later in September exclusively at Village Vanguard's website for 1,080 yen (or about $10).

The curry originated as part of a contest among Village Vanguard's staff to brainstorm cool, distinctive products. Other oddball ideas include a rice ball backpack...

... a "tsundere" T-shirt (it says "[I'm] Against [it]")...

... and seme and uke mugs (terms used for roles in gay relationships among the yaoi fandom).

If you're interested in their other products, see here.
