Akira's Otomo Makes "Hi no Yōjin/Combustible" Anime Short

Acclaimed manga creator and anime director Katsuhiro Ōtomo will preview "Hi no Yōjin" ("Combustible"), a new animated short film that he has been making for release this year, at France's Fête de l'anim' festival on March 18. Otomo created a one-shot manga called "Hi no Yōjin" in the very first issue of the Comic Cue anthology from East Press in December of 1994. (The issue is cover-dated 1995.) The story centers around people who put out fires in Japan's historical Edo period.
Otomo began his career as a manga creator on such works as Domu, Kibun wa mō Sensō, and his most famous title internationally, Akira. He then branched into animation by directing part of the Robot Carnival omnibus and a feature film adaptation of his own Akira story. He directed other anime projects such as the Memories omnibus, the Gundam: Mission to the Rise event short, and the Steamboy feature. He also collaborated on Harmagedon, Roujin Z, Spriggan, Metropolis, Freedom Project and Hipira: The Little Vampire.
The festival will run from March 15 to March 18 at Tourcoing and Lille. Otomo's "Masterclass" itself will be held on March 18 at Tourcoing.
