Prefectural high school music club league attributes turnout of 1st contest to K-ON!'s popularity

The city of Saitama in Saitama prefecture held its first prefectural high school light music contest on August 4. Teachers and advisers of light music clubs in the prefecture had established a "Prefectural High School Light Music Club League," and 18 schools participated in the contest.

According to the league, more than 100 high schools within Saitama prefecture have light music clubs or groups. The league also noted that more than 100 light music club members participated in the contest, and attributed the turnout to the popularity of the K-ON! comedy anime.

The K-ON! anime follows a group of high school girls who form an afterschool light music club. K-ON!!, the second television anime series based on the manga, ran from April to September of last year, and a film adaptation will premiere in December. Bandai Entertainment licensed the anime.

The original K-ON! four-panel comedy manga from creator kakifly ended its first run last September. kakifly resumed the manga in April, covering the characters in both college and high school. Yen Press is publishing the manga in North America.
