New York City: Film Society Begins December with Three Special Events

Economist Joseph Stiglitz on stage for new documentary travelogue, Dec. 3
Young Friends of Film hosts Annie Ross for 15th anniversary of “Short Cuts,” Dec. 4
U.S. premiere of Oshii's “The Sky Crawlers,” Dec. 12

NEW YORK, Nov. 6, 2008—The Film Society of Lincoln Center hosts a celebrated economist, remembers Robert Altman's ensemble masterpiece “Short Cuts” and offers a premiere look at the newest work from “Ghost in the Shell”-director Mamoru Oshii during the first two weeks of December. These exclusive events begin when Nobel Laureate in Economics and Columbia University professor Joseph Stiglitz joins the Film Society to answer questions following a 7:00 p.m. screening of Jacques Sarasin's new travelogue, “Around the World with Joseph Stiglitz” on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

Sarasin's documentary follows the economist as he studies the perils and promises of the increasingly international economy. He begins in his hometown of Gary, Ind., where Inland Steel was sold to an Indian conglomerate. Traveling the world to interview such wide-ranging figures as the president of Ecuador, African tribesmen, South American oil workers, angry farmers in India and the former president of Botswana, Stiglitz examines the great paradox of our times: how globalization, such a boon to some countries, has proved so disastrous for others. Tickets are $15; $12 for Film Society members and students; and $13 for seniors.

Young Friends of Film will welcome actress and jazz great Annie Ross to the Walter Reade Theater for a 15th anniversary screening of Robert Altman's ensemble masterpiece, “Short Cuts,” Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7:00 p.m. Based on the writings of Raymond Carver, the film weaves stories of disconnection and discontent between several L.A.-based characters. The all-star cast—including Ross, Tim Robbins, Julianne Moore, Jack Lemmon, Tom Waits, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Matthew Modine, Lili Taylor, and Robert Downey, Jr., among many others—garnered several ensemble acting awards. The film opened the 31st New York Film Festival and won the Golden Lion at Venice. A party with an open bar and hors d'oeuvres will follow the screening. Young Friends of Film members receive one complimentary ticket. Admission is $25 and includes the post-screening party.

Young Friends of Film, a membership program at the Film Society, is designed for film enthusiasts ages 21 to 40. Screening classic films from past New York Film Festivals and New Directors/New Films, with special guest speakers and after-screening parties, Young Friends of Film events gives younger generations of moviegoers access to remarkable films they may not have seen on the big screen.

Finally, the Film Society will screen the U.S. premiere of Mamoru Oshii's newest film, “The Sky Crawlers,” on Friday, Dec. 12, at 7:00 and 9:30 p.m. A haunting anime take on the clash between duty and desire, “The Sky Crawlers” imagines a not-so-distant future when humanity's war-like tendencies have been channeled into a constant battle between fighter pilots known as Kildren. When one of them, Yuichi, is assigned to a new base, he is sure that he's seen the base's beautiful commander before. His search for the missing link leads him into his past, which seems more mysterious the more he remembers. Winner of the Future Film Festival's Digital Award during this year's Venice Film Festival, “The Sky Crawlers” is full of Oshii's intriguing blend of philosophy and science fiction, while featuring brilliantly conceived and executed sequences of aerial combat.

Oshii is a formative personality in the anime world, with more than 20 titles to his credit and having co-founded the renowned Studio Ghibli with Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. His cyber-punk landmark “The Ghost in the Shell” (1995) was the first animated feature to compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Tickets are $11; $7 for Film Society members, students and children (6-12, accompanied by an adult); and $8 for seniors (62+).

Tickets for all Film Society of Lincoln Center events are available at the Walter Reade Theater box office, online at filmlinc.com, and by phone at (212) 875-5601.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and International Cinema, to recognize and support new directors, and to enhance the awareness, accessibility and understanding of film. Advancing this mandate today, the Film Society hosts two distinguished festivals. The New York Film Festival annually premieres films from around the world and has introduced the likes of François Truffaut, R.W. Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard, Pedro Almodóvar, Martin Scorsese, and Wong Kar-Wai to the United States. New Directors/New Films, co-presented by the Museum of Modern Art, focuses on emerging film talents. Since 1972, when the Film Society honored Charles Chaplin in person, the annual Gala Tribute celebrates an actor or filmmaker who has helped distinguish cinema as an art form. Additionally, the Film Society presents a year-round calendar of programming at its Walter Reade Theater and offers insightful film writing to a worldwide audience through Film Comment magazine.

Please note: Due to construction work taking place around Lincoln Center, access to the Walter Reade Theater is at 165 West 65th Street close to Amsterdam Avenue. Once there, take the escalator, elevator or stairs to the upper level.
