Female-Centric Doujinshi Vendor Meikido Lives Again

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The female-centric second-hand doujinshi vendor Meikido announced it would close and file for bankruptcy in the Hiroshima district court. However, a new development means Meikido's services will live on.

The female-centric merchandise store Surugaya has come to the rescue and will rebrand as "Surugaya Specialty Store for Women Supported by Meikidō" this fall. Surugaya plans to add dojinishi previously offered by Meikidō. The stores will undergo changes to accommodate the new inventory starting with Meikido's Nagoya location and Surugaya Nihonbashi Ota Road location in Osaka.

The Hiroshima-based Meikido company was first established in 1993 and had branches in Osaka, Nagoya, Ikebukuro, Fukuoka, and elsewhere. It also functioned as a mail-order service. According to Tokyo Shoko Research, Meikido was making over 700 million yen (US$6.5 million) worth of sales in 2012, but it suffered declining sales over recent years. Last year, it closed its Ikebukuro branch.
