TV Program Discusses Sports Manga's Impact on Athletes

A new season of the Bokura wa Manga de Tsuyokunatta (We Became Strong With Manga) television program premiered on NHK BS1 on Friday, and new episodes will air every Friday at 11:00 p.m. The program had previously aired irregularly under various titles.

The theme of the episode that aired on Friday was "comeback." Kazuyuki Kyoya, a former soccer player who switched to wheelchair basketball following a traffic accident after reading Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk, appeared in the episode. Moment: Eien no Isshun figure-skating manga creator Satoru Makimura also appeared. Toshiyuki Toyonaga, voice of Yuri!!! on Ice's Yūri Katsuki, and Ayumu Murase, voice of Haikyu!!'s Shōyō Hinata, narrated the episode.

Figure skater Daisuke Takahashi serves as the "navigator" for the program's new season. Athletes discuss with Takahashi the influence certain manga have had on their lives and careers. The show also reveals the untold stories of the creation of sports manga. In the past, the program covered manga such as Wataru Watanabe's Yowamushi Pedal, Shinji Morisue and Hiroyuki Kikuta's Ganba! Fly High, and Haruichi Furudate's Haikyu!!.
