Osamu Tezuka's Ayako Manga Ending Collected for 1st Time

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Publisher fukkan.com and bookstore Tsutaya are collaborating to release Osamu Tezuka's Ayako manga in two compiled books with its original magazine ending for the first time. The book set will ship at the end of December.

The manga originally ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine from 1972 to 1973. The series was later compiled into book volumes, but the releases did not include the ending that appeared in the magazine. The upcoming release of the manga will include the seven-page alternate ending from the magazine in compiled form with the rest of the story for the first time.

The release will also mark the series' first compiled publication to feature the same flow, page divisions, and B5-size as the manga's original magazine run. In addition, the 700-page release will include the two-color frontispieces for every chapter, Tezuka's afterword for the manga, an illustration gallery, and commentary.

The limited-edition release will mark the 90th birthday of the late "God of Manga" in 2018. Customers who purchase the reprint from fukkan.com for 11,988 yen (about US$107) will receive a storage box to hold both books and a reproduced original illustration by Tezuka, while supplies last. People who order through the website will also receive the set one month before it goes on sale in bookstores.

Ayako tells the story of a Japanese family plagued by dark secrets after World War II. Ayako suffers the brunt of discovering her family's shame, and as a result, is locked up in the family basement for the next 24 years. She finally emerges as an attractive woman seeking affection but also terrified of the world around her.

Vertical released the manga in English in one single volume in both hardcover and paperback.
