Ao Oni Horror Game Gets Smartphone Sequel This Month

Closed school setting revealed for game about blue demons

YouTube management company UUUM's official website revealed on Tuesday that it is partnering with developer GOODROID to launch Ao Oni 2 (Blue Demon 2), a smartphone game sequel to noprops' Ao Oni horror game, in the last third of December. The game will take place in a closed school.

Ao Oni is a horror game that makes the player solve various puzzles and riddles in order to escape a demon in a locked or enclosed space. The game first debuted as a free game released online in 2004. The game is available to play in both Japanese and English.

Crunchyroll began streaming the Aooni The Blue Monster (Ao Oni: The Animation) television anime shorts on October 2. The shorts are a comedic take on the original story with the familiar characters drawn in super-deformed style. The Ao Oni: The Animation anime film is slated to open in 2017. The film, in comparison to the currently airing television anime comedy series, will be closer to the traditional mystery horror of the original game, although it will have a new story that is different from the original game, novelization, and live-action films.

Publisher PHP Institute released a novel inspired by the game in Japan in February 2013. The franchise also inspired two live-action films in July 2014 and July 2015.
