AKB48 founder and producer Yasushi Akimoto announced on Sunday that he will produce a new idol group with the concept of "idols that cross dimensions." The group will have eight anime idol characters, with their respective voice actresses performing as idols in the real world. A different character designer will handle each member's anime design, with Masayoshi Tanaka (your name., Toradora!, anohana) and Kyoto Animation's Yukiko Horiguchi (K-ON!, Tamako Market, Kokoro Connect) already announced as character designers.
Akimoto founded the AKB48 idol group in 2005, with its sixth and latest domestic sister group, STU48, launching next summer. Akimoto also founded AKB48's "official rival group" Nogizaka46.
