TOKYO—July 14, 2016—Amazon today announced Crayon Shin-chan: Alien vs. Shinnosuke, a Japanese Amazon Original Series, will premiere on Prime Video on August 3. The new drama series for nationally treasured Crayon Shin-chan is set in the future in space and combines comedy, suspense, innovative imagery and a new animation style to create a new Crayon Shin-chan production unlike any other TV or movies starring the anime character. The series features direction by Michio Mihara, who previously directed Crayon Shin-chan: Fast Asleep! Dreaming World Big Assault! and screenwriter Kimiko Ueno, who wrote Tiny Balloon and Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! The series also features voices by Akiko Yajima (Shin-chan), Miki Narahashi (Misae), and Keiji Fujiwara (Hiroshi). The 13-episode season will premiere exclusively for Prime members via the Amazon Video app for TVs, connected devices including Fire TV, Fire tablets, mobile devices and online at www.amazon.co.jp/PrimeVideo.

“We're really excited to offer this new Crayon Shin-chan: Alien vs. Shinnosuke series as our first Japanese original animation,” said James Farrell, Head of Content, Asia Pacific, Prime Video. “Not only is this the first time the hugely popular anime character has been available on demand, it's also his first time to star in a kids sci-fi thriller. We know his fans are going to love the opportunity to see him up to his usual antics.”

“It's been 25 years since Crayon Shin-chan was first animated,” said Shin-Ei Animation producer Motomichi Araki. “For this important milestone, we wanted to present a new Crayon Shin-chan, completely different from the other TV and the movies. The series is set 100 years from now in the year 2116. It starts with the entire Nohara family and their pet dog waking up in an unfamiliar space station. It's an original spin-off, a mix of nail-biting action and typical Shin-chan comedy on the themes of human drama and as well as suspense in the confined space-station location. The meticulously planned trap will fool everyone…maybe, so be sure and don't miss it.”

“The Nohara clan is always the same, wherever and whenever, except this time they're in a sci-fi story located in space with loads of suspense and action and surprising twists,” said director Michio Mihara. “We tried to make a show that long-time Crayon Shin-chan fans would love, as well as one that would appeal to fans of movies like Star Wars and Alien. Kimiko Ueno's screenplay is amazing, and I'm really delighted to have gotten to work with her. It's my first work as director, so I'm excited to do my best.”

“This Crayon Shin-chan drama series is unlike TV or film," said showrunner and screenwriter Kimiko Ueno. "The first streaming series is a space thriller. Shin-chan cracking gags in a comedy/suspense in a locked-room universe. I can't say much more without giving away spoilers, but I will say that director Michio Mihara's imagery is mind-blowing every time. When I was writing the screenplay, I surprised myself with the twists in the story. We have all worked hard to ensure that it's a fun piece.”

In the first episode, “What if Shinnosuke encountered aliens in a drifting spaceship?”Shinnosuke and the Nohara family awake from suspended animation to find themselves on a spaceship filled with strangers. Intrigue begins almost immediately with the disappearance of crew members, the spaceship being struck by a mysterious object and more. Is there a mastermind behind these events? Could it be aliens? Will Shinnosuke return home safely to earth?

Crayon Shin-chan: Alien vs. Shinnosuke is a Shin-Ei Animation production in conjunction with TV Asahi. Original story by Yoshito Usui and serialization by Futabasha/Mangatown.
