Japanese publisher Shogakukan is printing I Kill Giants, the International Manga Award-winning series by American writer Joe Kelly and Spanish artist JM Ken Niimura, this month. The first chapter was previewed in the January 2013 issue of Shogakukan's Monthly Ikki magazine on Saturday. The publisher's Ikki Comix imprint will then publish the series in one Japanese-language book volume on Friday.

The story centers on a socially awkward girl named Barbara who believes that giants exist. One day, Barbara gets into a fight with the bully Tyler and accidentally hits her good friend Sophia. While Barbara worries about losing her friend, she prepares herself to ward of the coming giant attack. Kelly has worked on the American cartoons Ben 10 and Generator Rex as well as numerous comic books, while Niimura's work has been translated into six languages.

I Kill Giants was the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' winning choice for this year's International Manga Awards. Image Comics first published the series in the United States in 2008. Ikki magazine's current issue includes an article by manga artist Ryusuke Hamamoto (LR Shōjo Tantei Dan, Petit Eva, Hiyo ni Bocchi) that discusses I Kill Giants.
