Pokémon Sun & Moon Teases On Point Utena Homage

Kunihiko Ikuhara's Revolutionary Girl Utena is 20 years old this year and has since celebrated with rosy booze, merchandise, an exhibition, a Blu-ray release, and a brand-new musical.
Two decades later, the series is still influential. Viewers were able to see the fruition of Ikuhara's legacy in last season's Revue Starlight and can tune in to the upcoming episode of Pokémon Sun & Moon for a huge Utena shout-out. The next episode preview aired on Sunday and shows characters Lillie and Mallow appearing in the episode "Yūsha Liliel to Alola no Tsue!" (The Hero Liliel and the Alola Staff!) dressed as Utena and Anthy, albeit with a few costume color changes.
The episode's plot centers on a school play performed by Ash, his classmates, and other characters. The preview also shows at least one reference to Osamu Tezuka's Princess Knight. The rest of the characters appear in varying roles as Pokémon or, in Ash's case, as a wizard. Kiawe dresses as Solgaleo and Jessie appears as Lunala.
The episode will air in Japan on October 21.
