Gundam Theme Park to Be Replaced by Japan's Biggest Gundam Model Center

posted on by Egan Loo
Gundam Base Tokyo opens this summer, before life-size Unicorn Gundam's fall debut

Bandai announced on Sunday that after the Gundam Front Tokyo amusement park closes at the DiverCity Tokyo mall on April 5, The Gundam Base Tokyo complex will take its place this summer. The complex on the mall's seventh floor will be Japan's largest one devoted to Gundam plastic models (Gunpla), as well as a "base" for disseminating news and information to Gundam fans.

Unlike the current Gundam Front Tokyo, The Gundam Base Tokyo will not have an amusement area that requires paid admission. Strict-G, the Gundam-themed fashion store that is also on the seventh floor of Diver City Tokyo, will remain after Gundam Front Tokyo closes, but it will be revamped before it reopens alongside The Gundam Base Tokyo.

South Korea and Taiwan already have a successful chain of 11 Gundam Base stores that sell Gunpla, hold informal model-building classes in a workspace for builders, and offer exclusive goods. However, the 2,000-square-meter (20,000-square-foot) Gundam Base Tokyo will be Japan's first complex devoted to selling the 2,000 varieties of Gunpla released since the first debuted in 1980.

The anime studio Sunrise also announced on Sunday that a new life-size statue of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam will replace DiverCity Tokyo's life-size RX-78-2 Gundam statue this fall.
