Shinya Shokudō Manga Gets 4th Live-Action Season, 2nd Film

A new live-action film and live-action drama season adaptation Yarō Abe's Shinya Shokudō (Midnight Diner) manga has been green-lit. The film will open in Japan on November 5. The new season of the live-action drama will premiere on Netflix in 190 countries starting on October 21. Both the film and new season will once again star Japanese Academy Award winner Kaoru Kobayashi (Tokyo Tower: Mom and Me, and Sometimes Dad, Princess Mononoke) as Master.
Guest stars in the film include Kōichi Satō, Aoba Kawai, Sōsuke Ikematsu, Midoriko Kimura, Hijiri Kojima, Misako Watanabe, and Hisashi Igawa. Joji Matsuoka will return to direct the film.
Guest stars in the new season include Reiko Kataoka, Koen Kondo, Yoshinori Okada, Go Ah-sung, Mamiko Itō, Yūma Yamoto, Kotaro Shiga, Mitsuru Hirata, Kōsuke Toyohara, B-saku Satō, Hirofumi Arai, Yoshiyuki Morishita, Tamaki Ogawa, Junko Miyashita, and Toru Kazama. Matsuoka, alongside Nobuhiro Yamashita, Shōtarō Kobayashi, Tatsushi Ōmori, Yasuhiro Yoshida, and Fumio Nomoto, will direct the new season. The season will have 10 episodes.
The manga, which was nominated for the bookseller-selected Manga Taishō ("Cartoon Grand Prize") in 2009, centers on the proprietor of a small, mysterious cafeteria in Shinjuku and his customers. The cafeteria opens at midnight to fix customers any dish they request.
The manga's third live-action television season premiered in 2014 and ran for 10 episodes, while the first live-action film debuted in January 2015. The second live-action television season premiered in 2011 and ran for 10 episodes. The first series also ran for 10 episodes in 2009.
Shogakukan's Big Comic Original magazine currently serializes the manga. The publisher released the 15th compiled book volume in Japan last September, and the 16th volume will ship on May 30. The series also won the general category award at the 55th Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2010, and it received the grand prize at the 39th Japan Cartoonist Awards that same year.
