Pokémon GO Player in Japan Meets Spouse Through Game

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Twitter user @shibuya319 is a serious Pokémon GO player. He's a level-40 Team Mystic member in Tokyo who claims to be the sixth person in Japan to earn the gold Kanto medal in the game. According to stereotypes conventionally applied to gamers, society might presume he would be unlucky in love due to his hobby. However, playing Niantic's Pokémon GO smartphone game actually led him to find the love of his life.

The Twitter user announced on Monday that he married "Rii-san," whom he met through Pokémon GO on August 27, 2016. He said he was glad to have been able to get married on the anniversary of meeting his partner. He added, "My life has changed in a big way thanks to Pokémon GO. We'll build a happy family while continuing to enjoy Pokémon GO!"

@shibuya319 posted a screenshot of the Lapras he caught on the day he met his soulmate. He also posted pictures of various Pokémon wedding items, including the couple's themed marriage registration form and gifts. The photo of 16 phones shows the Pokémon GO profile screens of friends that @shibuya319 has made while playing the AR game.

Other couples have already had Pokémon-themed weddings. For Trainers who want to say "I choose you" with special jewelry, U-Treasure has been offering Pokémon-inspired engagement rings and wedding bands since at least 2016.
