Tokyo's Rare Snowfall Brings Out Anime Snowmen Small & Tall

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Snowpocalypse 2018 brought several inches of snow to Tokyo on Monday, causing transportation delays and general havoc amongst citizens accustomed to little more than a powdered-sugar dusting. Japan's Meteorological Agency issued the metropolis' first official heavy snowfall warning since February 2014. Foreigners, children, and those with more experience in frozen water falling from the sky rejoiced at the picturesque scenery. Some people in Japan, including anime fans, also had fun with the wintry accumulation.

In the Tweet above, cosplayer Aokage describes turning a car into the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro to delight the large number of children in the neighborhood.

Pokémon's official Project Eevee account joined in, creating a life-size Eevee out of snow and nori seaweed sheets.

Other fans crafted characters such as Totoro and Sgt. Frog's Yukiki.

Gundam enthusiasts found Odaiba's RX-0 Unicorn Gundam statue to be extra photogenic with a coating of snow.

Less ceremoniously, a fan snapped a photo of Patlabor's life-size AV-98 Ingram robotic mecha under a blanket of snow.

Meanwhile, Tokyo's otaku promised land Akihabara became a winter wonderland.

The uncommon snowfall could be good preparation for Hokkaido's annual Sapporo Snow Festival, held in Japan's northernmost prefecture every February. Last year's anime-related sculptures included Final Fantasy VII's Cloud and Sephiroth, as well as the latest Snow Miku.
