Pokémon Illustrator Trading Card Sells for an Impressive US$54,000
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
The ultra-rare Pokémon Illustrator trading card brought in a tidy sum at auction last week. Heritage Auctions announced on Monday that the card pulled US$54,970, slightly more than the expected US$50,000.
The card is not technically an official in-game card, but a prize given for winning an art contest held by CoroCoro Comic magazine between 1997 and 1999. Three were held, with a total of 39 winners — meaning that there are at most 39 of these cards in existence. Most likely, though, there are fewer; only 10 have been certified by the PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), and many counterfeits are in circulation. One of these certified cards sold on eBay for US$100,000 and another sold in 2000 for US$23,000.
Hertiage Auctions' director of operations Barry Sandoval credited the sale to the popularity of the Pokémon Go mobile game.
