Yoshitsugu Matsuoka Heads to the Kitchen for a Third Time

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, who plays the lead character, Yukihira Sōma, in Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, fancies himself quite the chef. This week he taped the third installment in his cooking web series, "Shokugeki no Soma ~Oshokujidokoro Matsuoka~" ("Restaurant Matsuoka").

In this week's episode, Matsuoka once again pairs squid tentacles with peanut butter, although this time he uses foreign peanut butter (Japanese peanut butter is sweet). The results are still, unsurprisingly, very unappetizing. He is then joined by Food Wars! co-star Shizuka Ishigami, who plays Ikumi; she requests a meat donburi (rice bowl). Matsuoka obliges with "Tsuguburg don," a beef-and-pork Salisbury steak served with onions, parsley and "white hair onions" (the white part of green onions sliced very thinly) and topped with a sauce of crispy bacon and plum paste. The steak itself includes agar and dried wheat gluten (ofu), which gives it a special flavor.

Cooking is a lengthy process, so Matsuoka and Ishigami find plenty of time to talk about other things, like Matsuoka's difficulties communicating with his elders, his lack of ability to economize while shopping for food as a teenager, and his favorite character in Food Wars! (Megumi).

"Shokugeki no Soma ~Oshokujidokoro Matsuoka~" airs on the third Friday of every month. The second episode featured Risa Taneda (Erina), while the first episode involved Minami Takahashi (Megumi).
